Starting a Coal Forge EASILY!

In this video, I share my tips for starting a coal forge easily! A blacksmith's forge fire can be difficult to start if you are unfamiliar with working with coal. With my tips, you should be starting a coal forge lickity split!

Most of my forges use a clinker breaker and thusly I clean it out as its used by grinding them up and dumping them out. At the next opportunity of use, I flip the breaker over and dump out the ash and what clinker remains. The clinker breaker seems the easiest method/manner to use a forge.

Excellent tip, Roy! Thank you very much. ^^ Any tips on how big your coal forge should be? Cuz I'm kinda stuck here. My forge is a little one I got from my grandpa. It's fireplace is roughly 50cm x 40cm big and like 8cm deep. It's got some sort of taper in it, so the coal always get's pushed to the middle of the firepot by gravity. The thing is - my steel oxides as hell. It's a major prpblem for me because I cannot forge weld this way. If I turn down the air supply my fire is not hot enough to heat my steel. I'm using the same type of coal as you do, I think. I think it's a construction flaw of my forge.

Seems like extra work to me. I'd always rake the fire out, rid it of clinnker then light the forge. How come you don't use an electric blower? Only time I use my hand crank is at demos.

Ok be nice. Call me a beginner. What different kinds of coal are there? You said bi something. I have coal that doesn’t light or burn very well at all.

Audio is crap. Get an electric blower. Same old fire starter as the old days. Use a propane torch with harder wood for quicker fire.
