Hey Jake, just want to say thank you. Im a semi experienced inker. I recently just subscribed to SVS and watched your whole inking class last night. Leveling up is the best way to put it. Great class, and just wanted you to know it is appreciated. Love the video, and again it is great to see you finally take the leap. Keep it up bud!

Hey Jake I just wanted to thank you for offering your insights and information into the biz of becoming an illustrative artist. As an art student I've found your tips incredibly helpful because even though I've been attending university for a while now, I have been quite lost and confused as to how I will find my way into my preferred field of interest. It is difficult when you don't live in a big city and lack connections or a proper mentor, so you have kind of fallen into that place by default and I just wanted to say I am so grateful for the help you give to all of us budding artist. I hope one day my work will inspire you as yours does to many others.

Ooo my goodness I've been binge-watching your videos while I organize my art desk and do art school projects and I am so stoked about all my projects now and you're a big help thank you.

Thanks for this! I especially feel that it is true that the high from finishing a project is greater than the one you get from starting a project--but they are different. When you start you're thinking, "This is going to be SO COOL!" and in the end you say, "This isn't perfect, but I did what I said I'd do." Pushing through that in-between time is the real slog. :-)

Late to the game, here (viewing in March 2020). So I'm listening to Jake's words of advice, then I stop and realize he's PWNING this airplane! Your control of the brush pen is awesome! Love the line variation!

Jake!! This is fantastic. Im watching this video for the second time. I appreciate the wisdom you bring to the table for creatives. I loved following the kickstarter and seeing all the steps that go into these projects. I ordered sky heart and every time I look at the book on my desk its motivation to put my dreams on paper. Push through those "not sure how to" moments. The finished thing in my hands is very rewarding. Thank you for the focus you put in every you tube video.

Just want to say thanks for starting Inktober - I've done self-imposed art challenges before. but nothing so focused. It's helping me reconnect with my inky roots! Just like you said in this video, I found your work through Inktober, and now I'm following you around the interwebz. Also like watching you draw, it's very soothing (though makes me itch to have my own brush in hand). Love your work!

You are absolutely right about that Jake. People want to see the finished project and not really how you got there. I get that at my job in the IT field also, but I enjoy the journey my self. btw - really like your style and the videos you put out. I even ordered some of those pens from Japan you talked about.

I enjoy your work bake keep it up. So far I'm 18 and I don't have a career yet but since I've started drawing I kinda just did it for me because it was fun and definitely the rush and high you get as you're doing the project. You describe the way of an artist so well.

I really hope you will 1) succeed! 2) ship to Europe or make the project Europe -friendly (I don't really mind ordering from Paddys books in UK, but I would like to get my hands on this kickstarter) 3) make some of your other stuff available to order in a bundle (ex: Lord Balderben. haha I will stop ask about this one, but it's just so awesome!)

I'm doing Inktober this year, and it's my first year!! Can't wait. I can't draw for shit with a brush pen nor do i do much illustration (I mainly do abstract art). So, I'm going to the extreme and doing illustrations with a Pentel Pocket Brush. Can't wait to get started.

cant wait to see the kickstarter, am starting to get into making comics and starting a collection to learn from. do a video on how to bake cookies but instead of baking them for real make it a short comic because i cant think of a good video idea right now =)

I'm so proud that you're pushing yourself to work on your dream comic! I'll be giving what I can to the kickstarter when it's up! I can't wait to watch it unfold! Also, I LOVE those clouds! They look good enough to eat! Hahaha. :D

Hey Jake, I just want to say something and get it off my chest: Whenever I go to draw something, anything, I typically hate it and so I give up and feel down on myself. And so I be cautious, and I barely ever draw, and so I feel down because I don't motivate myself to draw anything. I can't win! I am only 15, so I know I have a long way ahead if I want to get better, but I just hate creating things I know people won't like and pretend to like. I'm so stuck at this moment. Thank you so much if you read this whole thing.

Watch his "Finished, not perfect" video. Most people are pretty bad when they are beginners; with drawing or anything else. You don't get better until you put in the practice!

Monotizing inktober: hire others to manage marketing: Products: mug, ballpoint pen, brush pen, The Best of Inktober 20XX compilation books (along with the t-shirts). Let others run that side of things.

Jake! First of all, awesome both the drawing and the talk! The Inktober is big! Everybody's talking about it on Facebook. Lots of great artists too! Say... Do you think on doing a video with stuff from people who participated? Drawings that might have picked your interest? Not sure if you got the time to do that, but if you do..!

Hey Hi Jake !! I hope you're doing great ! I'm kinda bingewatching your videos because there are super inspirational and I love watching them while I'm working ! I did the last two Inktobers which made me re-discover and fall in love again with traditional media but I really would like to go further in inking. You're talking about these inking courses on SVS but I can't see it anymore on the website. Is it still available ? Thanks a lot !

Hey Jake, so hopefully you can help me out with something. I'm pretty new to illustration as a job, I just got signed to an agency and only recently got my first well paid freelance project under my belt. I'm not at a point where I can live off my illustrations yet but it's the first step to what will hopefully be an awesome career. So, my issue is this. I almost have too many projects that I want to work on. I have about three very rough ideas for children's picture books, I have two ideas for web comics (one of them being a 'just for fun' project, the other being more of a 'one day I want to make this' project), I've started to put some serious thought into writing and illustrating chapter books because I find picture books don't accommodate the depth of some of the stories I want to tell and on top of all this I want to work on my portfolio and self promotion in the hopes of getting more freelance work. How do you decide which projects to pursue? I'm seriously stuck and I feel like I'm trying to do everything at once to the point where I can't focus on any single project and end up doing nothing.

Hey Jake, I watched your artist timeline and I was wondering what are the stages of an artists and could you go into detail? :) for example there is the beginner stage where you have to be more patient with yourself, the middle, etc. Thanks for reading I hope you have a good day!

I love that you're doing a series on both marrying a project AND kickstarter..It's almost as if you've tailored these just for me. Perfect haha. As for questions about kickstarter, I've always been curious about the 'fairly new' fulfillment companies as an option. Not sure that's what they're called, but they basically handle the processing of orders and even shipping etc. I'm not very organized and get overwhelmed by the 'anything that isn't art' parts of a kickstarter :P which is probably why I'm curious about this as an option. Have you looked into any of these places? or would you prefer to do it all 'in house'?

Hi Jake How do you approach drawing high detailed back grounds a jungle background when theirs so much detail where do you begin, any advice for doing complicated backgrounds please
@miriamrobarts7 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen him discuss this per se, but I think I remember him talking about not needing to draw every single little detail, and just drawing enough for the suggestion. So in a jungle, you could draw enough to see that there are lush leafy plants, without drawing each individual leaf on every plant.

In regards to #inktopber and the inking tools used, in your opinion, do you think digital inking with a pressure sensitive stylus counts as a legitimate work method when participating? As opposed to more traditional inking with ink and brush on paper.
@Cahurst29 жыл бұрын
I would think so. It's still something that you can improve on and has similar techniques to traditional inking.

What is your recommendation for someone wanting to do a Kickstarter without too much of an existing following to actually back you?
@jakeparker448 жыл бұрын
Either do a small scale kickstarter for under $1000 or just wait until you have 1000-10,000 followers. The skills that will get you from a 100 followers to 10,000 followers are the exact skills you need to launch a successful kickstarter and get the word out.
