This was 35 years ago. Jean Alesi is the only driver in this race who raced alongside one of the 2024 drivers. Fernando Alonso is the connection that bridges this gap

And now today, Alonso is about to make his 400th Grand Prix start. Timeless.

Caffi was a qualifying genius at the Hungaroring.

Apparently so. How did he manage to drag that Dallara up to 3rd on the grid? That's some Damon Hill-level Hungaroring effort.

Pirelli had a very good qualifying tyre. Brabham, Dallara and Minardi managed some sensational grid placings in certain venues

This race gave me goosebumps as a child. I will never ever forget Nigel Mansells overtaking move on Senna. I still remmeber Murray's great commentary moment - 'And Mansell goes through, ooh fantastic'.

@l228spn 3rd Indeed. I have the race highlights on an old VHS tape somewhere in my loft. Mansell won despite starting 12th on a track that was notoriously hard to overtake on. His pass on Senna toward the end was just epic.

I remember watching that film at school when I was about ten, being pretty bored with it all the way through, then that Ivory Tower scene came on with the music and I suddenly jolted awake - "I know that music!"

Third - Alex Caffi was a useful pedaller of midfield machinery, but this was also the era when Minardis were regularly in the top ten as well. Heck, in Portugal a Minardi even led briefly!

F1 should of used the theme tune from say the TV series "The Tripods" as grid music, more worthy of F1 than a cheap Casio Keyboard number. 😉
