You can slow down and reverse with auto acceleration on, since auto acceleration is not an immediate thing, the AI calculates a split second of no conflicting input before triggering auto acceleration, that's why drifting is way easier with auto acceleration on, because the AI calculates the perfect timing to alternate between the handbrake and the accelerator. Auto acceleration and steer are bad but not because they hinder you, they are bad because they give benefits to unskilled players. Dylan being the living proof of that.
