Starting my 1956 Ziegler VW industrial engine fire brigade water pump.wmv

I recently bought this 1956 Ziegler fire brigade water pump assembly, powered by a cool 1956 Volkswagen industrial 36 hp engine. The assembly came with 20 feet of "input" hose and three 50 foot long lengths of soft "output" hose lines. The engine has less than 100 hour run time on the motor, and it hadn't been started since 2004 when last started for the previous buyer/owner. After I rebuilt the carb, fuel pump and fuel tap valve, added new rubber fuel lines and an extra filter, and changed the oil, it was time to try to fire it up again...

This pump features a small light (seen in the video) to illuminate the gauges and normally has a headlight sized spotlight (missing from my unit - I'd love to locate one!) which swivels and can be aimed anywhere. The lights are powered by the generator/regulator. There is a removable block-off plate where a 6 volt starter could be re-mounted, but then you'd need to add a 6 volt battery and all that weight, hence the "crank-start" ability... So....if this engine was put in a super beetle you could essentially have a unique crank start super beetle.

Its crank start. It also has a generator with regulator. Why have the generator and regulator if its crank start, or does it have a starter also?

This unit never had a starter or 6 volt battery. You crank-start it. The engine therefore has a magneto instead of a distributor. The generator is installed to power the floodlight and smaller light fixture that illuminates the water pump section.

I ran the engine for a total of about 2 minutes. If anyone knows how to set the controls on a Ziegler water pump to safely leave the pump in "neutral" (not pumping water) while the engine is running, I'd love to hear from you at [e-mail] Does anyone have a Ziegler operators or owners manual I could copy???
