When I think of great gymnasts, Vanessa is one of them. She's truly in the ranks of Lilia Podkopayeva, Svetlana Korkina, Shannon Miller, Shawn Johnson, etc. Medals or not, she's a legend in the sport. I just wish she knew that!

Watching this after seeing her struggle as a gymnast, breaks my heart for her. She had so much natural power, but couldn’t use it to defend herself.I feel for this young lady, and glad she was able to show her real strength

The irony is that she did get a hug when she fell off beam at trials - from Bela of all people. He hugged her for several moments, asked if she was okay, and said as long as she's alright then that's the most important thing. By this time she was so emotionally damaged from all of the events of the year leading up to trials I think it was amazing she even made it as far as she did. Poor girl - she's still a national champion and will be remembered by hardcore fans as one of the best US gymnasts ever.

While this is true, after all the new documentaries that have come out the last couple years, people have said Bela was a showboat for the cameras..who knows

I am 53 years old now and I was born and raised in Santa Clarita. My family is the local Native American Tataviam Indian tribe of Santa Clarita valley. I was a natural athlete and thrived on working out and challenging myself. I always thought I was going to be a champion in athletics in some way and end up owning my own gym someday. But, my athletic ability ended in 1994 at the age of 26 years old. I was in a severe hit and run accident and left for dead in rush hour traffic on Bouquet Canyon Rd. In Santa Clarita, California. I was riding a Honda Elite Scooter the day I got hit and run by a flatbed truck that struck my scooter from behind and slammed me into a brand new Jeep Cherokee that was in front of me in traffic. I totalled that Jeep Cherokee with my scooter and my body. On that day my life changed after being in that hit and run accident and left for dead. Since that day I haven't been able to do anykind of athletics I use to thrive on. I've been dealing with extremely severe chronic back pain with severe nerve damage for the past 28 years now. I'm severely disabled now at the young age of 53. I can't do even the simplest daily tasks without using a walker to be able to function in each and everyway. It is not a happy existence being in constant pain 24/7 for the last 28 years. But, anyway a year after my hit and run accident I ended up working at this Arco gas station mini mart on Sand Cyn Road in Santa Clarita. I worked as a cashier at that mini mart for a couple of years. I was working the 2:00pm to 10:00pm shift one night. Around 8:00pm that evening a family came into the store. A mom and dad with two kids a boy and a girl. The cutest little girl with her blonde curlyish hair pulled back in to a pony tail. I notice the moment she walked through the door that she was wearing a white leotard and had such an athletic physique and energetic bounce in her step. This little girl carried herself in such an amazing way it was captivating. I couldn't help but notice the athletic ability that undeniably showed in her at even a quick glance. I remember watching this cute little blonde girl walking around inside the store that night. She looked like she was maybe 8 to 10 years old to me. But, I guess she was actually around 12 years old at the time. I had no idea of who this young girl was that had the look of a true champion. I remember when she finally came to the counter with her snacks she was purchasing. I remember having a big old smile on my face as she approached the counter to pay. I said well look at you. I'm guessing you are in gymnastics. She said yep. I said I bet your really, really good at gymnastics too huh? She said I'm hoping I'll be really, really good someday. I said don't worry I can tell that you have the look of a true champion. With a strong looking physic and the bounce she had in her step she was so light on her feet and with such a spring in her step. I said I bet your hoping you'll make it to the Olympics someday huh. She nodded her head yes with such inthoughessiam I hope I will someday. I told her I bet you will make it to the Olympics cause you look like the kind of person who makes it to the competitions of champion athletes. She said I do. I said heck yeah I bet your going tobe a gold medalist one day. She replied I really hope so. She thanked me and said goodbye.Herr and her family loaded up in their car and drove away. I saw that cute little girl a handful of times through that year. Little did I know who that little champion athlete was at the time. It was nothing but such the true champion Vanessa Atler. I saw something in the the local news that a girl named Vanessa Atler is a Olympic hopeful for the USA gymnastics team. It was such a trip when I saw her picture in the news. I thought to myself OMG! That's that cute little gymnastics girl that use to come into the mini mart Arco gas station I use to work at. I thought to myself how cool is that. I told that young lady 6 years earlier that I could tell that she would make it to the Olympics someday. How cool is that. She at least made it to the Olympics tryouts. I could tell she was a true champion from the first moment I laid eyes on her. So very cool! It's such a great memory that I have to cherish.

Vanessa is just a casualty of a “competed in the wrong quad” also, that Comenici salto should NEVER have been introduced
@MissLilRedRooster5 жыл бұрын
I read that she actually said that she wanted to keep it in, even if it wasn't consistent. Like she didn't want to give up and take it out. She was a product of a quad too focused on all around gymnasts. Had she come around in the next few quads, she could have specialized and dropped bars altogether, which I think would have done her so much good.
@kejonza4 жыл бұрын
She absolutely competed in the wrong quad.. but also, imagine her and Alicia Sacramone competing against each other.. there would only have been room for one on that olympic team too. argh. Unfortunately, she was the one who wanted the Comenici because her releases over the bar were always low. This meant she didn't have to go for amplitude. I blame the media for hyping it up way more than they should have - if it was just that first 97 nationals and NBC left it alone, she wouldn't have had the mental struggle that she did. At least that's what I think.

I feel bad for Vanessa because she seems like a really nice, sweet person. The Rybackie's are assholes, if only Vanessa switched coaches it would've been so much better for her.

Considering what she been through, she shows a fair amount of strength. Until you here the facts from a gymnast, it’s sad to here the abuse that goes with it!

@sixstoriesfall Recreational gymnastics could be an option maybe? Gymnastics really is great even if you don't push yourself to this level. If you daughter wants to do gymnastics she should at least have the option to try, maybe she doesn't want to push herself this far but just do it for fun. It's great for coordination, keeps you strong and flexible and the sense of achievement when you learn new skills REALLY is great for self-confidence and teaches you discipline as well.

@SexyLiLLeilaniMya i agree she needs that chance to release emotion and you can't when your competiting caz your being evaluated and watched and they don't want to see tears
@BigThunderFan13 жыл бұрын
@SexyLiLLeilaniMya exactly and i think that was the problem with vanessa she couldn't get any emotion out at all and i think that did her more harm then good and if she had that chance to just for once be a kid i think she could have done a great job in life it would have given her a chance to finally just let go and be the kid she and every other kid that does gymnastics deserve to be

@sixstoriesfall Geez, I wouldn't go that far....gymnastics is a great sport and it can build your confidence.....it's just a few situations where things can go bad.....i hope you reconsider putting your daughter in the sport. that's just my opinion.

I’ve often wondered this as well. Many from that quad did and it sounds like it was bad at the Sydney Olympics. She might have dodged an even bigger nightmare by not making the team. I truly hope nothing happened to her.

She said in an interview that she was not. (A very interesting interview all around): www.wogymnast.com/2017/06/former-us-gymnast-vanessa-atler-reveals.html

her Gymcastic podcast interview also says she was not. She makes a point of saying that its just as important for her to believe the women coming forward since she wasn't abused.
