I've got mine started already for next year. I'm wondering if anyone else starts theirs this early to grow over the winter and put a full-sized, fruiting plant out in the spring. It's kind of akin to wintering over a mature plant. I've been starting earlier each year, until I'm at the point now, where I start them around October 14. I still start my tomato seeds at Christmas, but root cuttings in October as well. Does anyone else do this?!

Just like 'maters, peppers need a long growing season to maximize the growth of their delicious fruit. In the Northern Hemisphere, we must start the seeds indoors early, as direct sowing outside leaves us with too short of a growing session.

I'm sharing cuz I almost screwed up and this might help some people. I was about to give up on my pepper seeds. Thank goodness I tagged them with the date sowed. I swore it was taking forever. I was about to dump them and start over. I looked at the tag and it was only 7 days. And they just started to pop up on the 8th day. Duh! I should mention I soaked the seeds in a wet paper towel for a week prior to sowing in the cells. That's probably why it seemed long. Tag your seed cells.

Only thing I'm going to say is that most videos that come out for growing peppers tend to ignore there are southern states where you can direct seed outdoors, or at the MOST start seed in a tray and then direct plant outdoors because it will be warm enough for peppers. If needed you can speed up the heating of the soil using black tarp so that both the soil and air temp are ready for peppers in mid Apr and you don't have to fuss too much with most of this indoor stuff. Or you can even wait to plant outdoors because the growing season is long, getting into Oct.
@YvrGirl4 жыл бұрын
Jeff when you plant indoors how many weeks is it before you transplant outside? Here it gets warm by mid May so when do you recommend the indoor seeding?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I time my planting (germinating) with when I want to plant outdoors. I start my seeds of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, etc 8-10 weeks before I want them in the garden. So if I want to plant everything outside April 15th, then my seeds should be going into soil indoors by February 1st. Too early and you run the risk of plants being too large and "soft" to go outside....too late and you're not taking full advantage of getting a head start in the first place. Hope that helps, cheers!

It’s much easier to moisten the soil before you put it in the cell.

Last year I had bell pepper plants. One plant was supposed to produce red bell peppers. I purchased plants at Fred Meyer. They did okay once the weather warmed up. But, we had our first frost the last weekend in September and the plants could not take it. I was able to get a total of three peppers off of two plants; but, none of them turned red. They were still good to eat and combined with my homegrown cucumbers, tomatoes, and bunching onions, they worked up into a tasty sandwich. I'm going to miss that if I can't figure out where I can put a grow station indoors.

I have started growing my sweet peppers from seeds last Friday. And 4 days later they have started to germinate. I've watched all 3 parts of your video, I am quite worried that by the time they grow up to 3-node sizes I've no place to transplant them.. Is it possible to pot them a couple in one pot as I can only plant indoors.. Or do they have to be by themselves in one pot? I know I am getting ahead of myself, but just wanted to know ahead of time so I know what to do WHEN and IF the time comes to transplant them. Thanks! Love your detail-orientated videos!
