I started my little 80 acres homestead about 24-25 yrs ago. Some of the things I failed to research is WATER how deep and how much? POWER how far? Is SOLAR feasible? We ended up going solar for about 9 yrs. What I found about solar: heat and batteries do not mix well. If you experience freezing temps you know batteries don’t like that, well they hate heat too. We have many days of 100 F (38c) plus here as well as a couple days a year freezing temps. The heat drains and shortens the life of batteries. Every couple yrs I would replace the entire battery bank at very high costs. I ran two inverters because one was not enough. We also learned about PROPANE refrigerators! They chill to about 40f below ambient temperature so if it was 110f guess what. Off grid was not planned out on my part. We hauled our water from a county well 25 miles away. Transport tanks as well as storage tanks are expensive as well as stress wear trucks. The two most loved and expensive improvements we did to our place is ran POWER and drilled a 700ft deep well.

Wouldn’t the battery be indoor temp? If you’re running A/C shouldn’t it be something like 68 degrees F?

O wonder why you would not have thought to use wind power to generate AC to DC using an automotive alternator ? In the desert you will pretty much of the time have some good winds.

You need to put your batteries where your mini splits is to regulate the temperature. I wouldn’t let my lithium freeze up during winter and over heat during summer.

Good luck with your project. I have spent lots of time and continue to spend lots of time in Eastern Nevada (Eureka County) and love it. I just came back from 3 weeks there and can comment on the heavy winds that will be blowing your way, so make sure your carport tent is latched down double good. Your are in for the some beautiful sunrises and especially sunsets in a Nevada sky. Wishing you the best .🤙

I've built a couple houses on raw property that I lived on while building and one piece of equipment that was worth it's weight in gold was a basic Skip loader tractor with a bucket on front and a scraper/claw on the back . If you need to do ditches for water rent a ditch witch but buy a skip loader so it's always there .

Hi Diane, thanks for your comment. Oregon is beautiful country. As for our journey out here, we are just starting to move forward on things. So far we are hauling in our water in 55 gal drums, and using a gas generator for power and portible draining system to empty our black water. We use the grey water for watering the ground area that we are prepping for grass and trees. Take care.

Just something to think about. You might want to check the flood plan in your area. If there is one. It looks like your trailer is in a low lying area. You might want to rethink what your doing. And build in a higher area. Flash floods will easily wipe you out. Also I lived in Nevada for 25 years and I never saw or even heard of badgers there. And I know a guy who has lived in Nevada all his life. And has been trapping all his life. And he has never seen or heard of any also. Anyway good luck.

They @Ass OG, thanks for your comment, yah we put sandbags along our exterior and made some french drains so we should be ok for the most part. But yeah your right we thought about the area where we put the trailer but looked at past runoffs. Should be ok. And I don't know anything about badgers either we've been out here 4 months and haven't seen any. Mostly elk and rabbits. Take care. ✌️

Been looking into doing something very similar and looks like it's getting closer to reality. Figured you'd be a great source to ask these questions. Any places in particular in Elko County one should look to avoid? Any places that you recommend? How much does it cost to fill your 55 gallon water tanks? And what have been your challenges living in the RV? Sorry for the barrage of questions. Keep up with the great videos, I've watched all of them.
@nevadadeserthomesteaders5037
@nevadadeserthomesteaders5037 Жыл бұрын
Hello Rick, Elko County is a great place to homestead due to the least amount of building restrictions. Having researched it out, we fiound the only restrictions is having a septic once you build a home or dwelling. No zoning regulations and you can live out of your RV as long as it takes, indefinitely. As you see it gets windy so that is one of the biggest challenges. Water is free if its within reason and you talk to the right gas station employee/owner. Otherwise there is a town well you can get a share with. Its non potable so you would need water filters. As far as locations, its all desert so lightning storms will spark brush fires so you need to create fire lines or breaks. Not really any bad areas just hard ones to get to for access roads so do your homework before your purchase. Thanks for your support and we'll be here if you have anymore questions.

Does your property have a deeded easement for the road? I have always wanted to move to the Nevada desert and am looking to buy in the coming years. Call the county with the parcel# and they should be able to tell you. Or look the property up on the assessors website. I was worried about my property’s access before buying, as listing and realtors did not say. Found it was a deeded road going back 30 years. Do your own research on everything.

That's what I'm wondering. We had a busy winter here on the eastern side of the Sierras. Lots of snow. Just drove through ne Nevada in May and that's some hard land to start a homestead. I'm too old for that business. Grass and trees? 🤣🤣🤣. Not without WATER. Tarp shed in the Nevada wind? 😳🤨. And from what I saw of the ground, they need to move that trailer to higher ground. Interesting to see if they come back.
