My son had croup that turned into pneumonia on his 1st birthday a month ago. DO NOT USE A WARM HUMIDIFIER. It can actually worsen his symptoms. Don't use a humidifier at all! Maybe it's different for every kid, but it made my son worse, not better at all. Just friendly advice.

***** Warm moist air is Definitly better than the dry air on his lungs. You'll never REALLY know if the humidifier was what made your son worse or not, Samantha.. None the less, it's not a fun thing to have to deal with! So hopefully Ollie feels better in no time.

Most pediatrician recommend cold air for safety reasons(so kids don't get burned), cold or warm air is fine in this situation. As long as they are not in DRY air environments .

We live in Ohio and when my son gets croup in the winter our dr. suggested we take him outside. Something about the cold air helps him stop coughing. We don't use a humidifier when he gets it but we bought a breathing treatment machine because he gets it so often.

For croup, You want to use cool air humidifiers! The cold air makes croup better! So weird that croup is treated opposite. We have had plenty of croup in our house!

My little girl had croup twice. The first time she wasn't even a year yet and she got bronchitis as well, it was terrible! The second time was four months later. It's really scary but they pull through! I hope he gets better soon. Sending my love!

Poor Ollie! :( Croup sucks. My little one gets it often. I agree with all the comments about cool air. If it's not cold out when ours has it and going outside to breath doesn't help, we have her stick her head in the freezer for a few deep breaths. Lol sounds so silly but it does open the air ways. I mean, do what you doctor tells you, obviously! But just trying to offer some helpful advise because it is a scary thing..

Sending all my love to Ollie and also to you guys as well as I know how scary croup is. My daughter is nearly 3 and has had it 6 times!! My doctor recommended taking her out in the Cold air for a few minutes to help her breathe, raising her mattress up on one side (pillows underneath) ice-pops, lots of water & juice. Milk actually makes croup worse :( I hope Ollie gets better very soon xx lots of love from the uk xx

Dont worry ive had croup for 15 years and its not effected me much he will out grow it in the end, just be careful when its muggy and foggy because that will effect him alot. Also my mum found that turning on the shower full heat and sitting me in their for 20 minutes works better. Also ypu have nothing to worry about because even my mum said when I would have a croup attack she could leave me for up to 20 mins before it became worse just make sure his room isnt too hot or too cold and when he does have a coughing fit take all his clothes off and just leave him in his nappy because that way his clothes arnt restricting his chest and he can get full breaths easier. I hope he gets better soon but when your motherly instinct goes off follow it. If you wake in the night and you feel as if somethings not quite right check on him because 99% of the tine its nothing but you can never be too safe xx

Emery has had croup so many times that I can't even count anymore. Aubree gets it now every time she gets a cold but so far not as bad as Emery has been. Warm mist might be okay if they are super congested but COOL mist is way better, croup is swelling in the upper airway and the cool air and mist brings down the swelling of the airway. Emery almost always requires a hospital trip for steroids and nebulizer but we always try the cool night air first. Croup sounds scary but most of the time gets better on it's own and doesn't require a hospital trip :) Get well Ollie!!

I had three kids, now all grown up, and all of them would get the croup every now and again. I think its more nerve wracking on the parents listening to that barking noise than it is on the kid. It sounds worse than anything else. Trust me, he will be doing just fine in a couple of days. Just do what the doc tells ya... steam and medicine and he will be just fine. No need to worry excessively, ok? You are good parents and instinctively you will do what you need to do, but, this sort of thing is very common with kids.

I had pneumonia in late 2014. I ha sit in my whole right lung. I we t to PsR Monday night was shaking like bacon how cold I was and I didn't go to school for the rest of the week cause o had pneumonia. It sucked so bad I could barely breathe or eat 😔 love you Ollie ur in my prayers feel better!

My little brother got laryngitis when he was almost a toddler (around one) and I would cry just to hear him coughing (it's a really really bad cough that sound like ughhh). Unfortunately he still get's it now and then, but you just have to handle it :(

My oldest son gets chronic croupe. Basically every time he gets a cold it turns into croupe. Our peds doc said cold only, so when he gets his coughing fit we open the freezer door and let him breath the cold air and it helps so much. Doc said no heat because his airway is already swollen and heat makes that worse. I really hope he gets better soon.
