Starting up my Freightliner Columbia and an overview

Hey i drove for marten and you are 100% right they dont ask you to run over your hours they tell you to do it or quite and if you dont they will fire you saying you were late on your loads to many times. trust me they did you a favor.

true, only we don't have the starting light, we have clicking sounds and gauges calibrating, when all of that is done, then start.. frankly I don't know whats the purpose of pushing the clutch in either. transmission is already disconnected from the engine by putting it in neutral.

I delivered a brand new Pete 387 to Marten in Nov '06. It wasn't governed at the factory, so I was able to run it wide open. They only govern the speed, not the horsepower.

yeah i tend to leave the car in gear but not on my truck as my clutch is air assited so if theres no air in the tanks then theres no clutch to disengage the box so the truck wont start i leave it in neutral no need to dip my clutch just turn the key build the pressure engage box & commence days work

Causes less strain on the starter and charging system to push the clutch in when you start it. If you don't push the clutch in you end up turning the entire transmission along with the engine when you start it up, which is very heavy.

@dieselducy I worked as a news photographer for 5 years. We had courses in media law every year by the lawyers, and you're right, you are able to take video of anything (to reason) on public property, but once you stepped into the truck, that became Marten property.

C-15 Cat eh? nice Most of the columbias in our fleet have Mercedes engines, and I've seen a couple with the Series 60.

FATASME: You don't have to wait for all that crap, shove the key in and start it, once the engine turns over it goes through all of that again. #2 Some trucks have clutch switches which require you to push the clutch in to start the truck, it sucks but what are ya gonna do? For safety, not that I follow this, applying the service brake and having the clutch in along with it in neutral is good insurance.

I've been driving trucks forever...Good luck finding a company that doesn't want you to work over your allowed hours lol....My longest day was 23hrs long but that's not to say I don't have long days often...that's the idea behind the paperless log system...but that can be beat too, if you know how.

Plus I hate the new CAT's, id rather have the pre-emmission single turbo C15, twin turbo ACERT, ahem A-SHIT sounds like crap, less power. Regardless they all get poor fuel mileage, burn lots of oil. On the plus side, the C15 at 430 hp moved pretty good.

@IlovemyGlock21 Like I said this isn't the only video of his or another elses so the assumption can't be made that the company only saw this video and this video alone. As a deputy, you should already know as law enforcement it's solely your job to enforce, not interpret, the law. Granted many LEO's do use personal discretion, which is good, it's not their job to do so. For a million dollar corporation, it's not policy enforcers place to make exceptions on behalf of the company.

When it comes to vehicles with manual transmissions you do have to push the clutch in because otherwise the key ignition won't turn and plus it causes less strain on the engine by pushing the clutch in and honestly if you don't push the clutch in, that will cause damage to the engine

Fact is it's written at many employers that employees aren't authorize to represent the company to media and press without prior approval. The why doesn't matter, why is j-walking across a deserted street still illegal. If they fired you over the videos and it was on public property then there must have been something ELSE! unless they did not notify you. If they require you to exceed your HOS then you might turn their asses into the DOT.

There was one video where this clown is taping himself picking up at the shipper, insulting the facility, and giving the exact detail about the load. Marten does not fire drivers for refusing to run illegal. What this jerk doesn't understand is, for security reasons, you just don't broadcast certain information to the world.

The lesson learned or to learn is read before you sign and if you sign something keep up your end of the deal.
