If only he actually ACTED like Kirk!

@@Shadowkey392 Chris Pine didn't really act like Kirk either, but back then that was just William Shatner's impression and that's typically how his acting style is, Chris Pine's version is just typical Chris Pine instead of Kirk in my opinion, but Paul Wesley's Kirk is also his own Kirk but stays more to the actual Trekkie side you know, so I actually like Paul's impression of Kirk.

I for one love the romance. TOS is dated firmly in the 1960s in many ways, from the models to the costumes to the sets. But it is dated in less tangible ways, as well. For example, Kirk's love affairs. He swept many women off their feet rather melodramatically in torrid and brief love affairs that don't quite fit with modern sensibilities. But look past the portrayal to the thing portrayed - those magical, romantic, sublime, beautiful moments where you are falling in love with someone. Those moments people remember for life and dream about years afterwards. The falling in love shared with people who are so special we all only get a few of them in our lives, if we are lucky. Those moments are so powerful and magical that TOS tried to portray them all the time, but here is the updated version. We are seeing what those women saw in Kirk as they were falling for him, and we are seeing it through La'an's eyes in a way that is refreshingly stripped of modern cynicism and irony.

A commenter on AOL once compared Kirk and Picard like this: “Captain Kirk was a macho hero out of 1950’s pulp fiction who always duked it out with the alien bad guys and got the girl in the end. Captain Picard was a more modern captain who came up in a time where a Starfleet captain who got horizontal with every green space babe had to worry about the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.”

I don't think Kirk was bedding girls in every episode, and one in which he had a "one-episode-fling"-City on the Edge of Forever. He deeply loved her. Kirk has an undeserved reputation. Also, think of it, the best episodes, such as the Trouble With Tribbles, Kirk isn't banging any girl.

I always wondered if Kirk's flings with all those alien women were his way of coping with the fact that his relationship with Carol ended miserably and that she wanted him to stay away from her or their son.

He's a flirtatious and charismatic man. I'd honestly be disappointed if the utopia of the future didn't have room for a man like that.

OK, do phasers not have stun settings anymore? This is the umteenth time in New Trek where they hesitated to shoot someone they had a phaser pointed at, only to have to fight the person in hand combat. STUN THEM and ask questions later.

Paul Wesley is more Christopher Pike than James T Kirk. He looks more like Jeffrey Hunter than Anson Mount does. I just don't see any Kirk in him. No problem with someone else playing Kirk. Chris Pine's Kirk was one of the better things about the Kelvin films.

My first reaction in season 1 episode 10 was that he looked like Jim Carey. I kept waiting for him to say 'All rightey then'. I got over that after watching it a couple of times.

@@richardcutts196I'm glad someone else sees the Jim Carey. Also he's got the mouth of Dick York. BUT - I like this James Kirk even if he feels like a different character who just happens to share the name "James Kirk" with William Shatner. And honestly, I'm okay with that. If we're being blunt, William Shatner's Kirk wasn't really a character so much as a collection of traits that Roddenberry thought a real man should have. The character was weak enough that, to squeeze some authentic emotion out of him, you'd have to do something like kill off his brother Sam. This new one, you can get about as much authentic emotion with just a minor squabble between Jim and Sam.

Instead of a close of up the bad guy I'd have done a slow-mo close up of Kirk and Uhura. She turns to look up at him as fire flares inches from their faces. Leave the bad guy and cut again to them materializing in the transporter room with steam rising off them, and their embrace lasting a little longer than it should have before they recover themselves. 💋 😘

This series is interesting in it's own way, but totally unreallistic in the way senior officers interact with juniors.......too touchy feely.....it really seems to me to just be a light, comedic version of Star Trek

Stop calling it Prime. They have made so many differences and changes from TOS canon anyone still insisting it's prime is delusional. Yes it's a great show, and well written, and the acting is amazing. But there is nothing prime about this EXCEPT they view themselves as prime as any universe would view themselves.

I'm not sure what you're driving at. Kirk didn't hit on every woman in the universe. Uhura and Kirk had professional relationship. The only physical relationship they shared was The Kiss. This episode is true to that relationship. As often as not, the romantic lead was a villain. Kahn, Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell, I believe Doctor Sevrin in "The Way to Eden." Other crew members took the lead as well, McCoy several times, Spock of course ...
