I thought you had to kill the dragon inside the cave. Edit: Apparrently you only need to kill the dragon in Winter. Idk whether this is a glitch.

@Yo its Bro Spiders (and all mobs) chase you 2 seconds after you come into aggro range, and you can land some hits during this window. Once the spider is on you, there is another 2 second delay before you get trapped. So you can kill the spider before it traps you. It's eaisier with a gold sword, but still possible with stone.
