I think that bourne hit the nail right on the head. After the season, Dubas took a step back, looked around and was clearly unhappy with his situation. He decided to evaluate his options, as was his right as his contract was coming to an end. Ultimately, he made a counter offer on what he thought was fair to him continuing with the Leafs. The leafs (and much of the fan base) did not agree with his valuation. It’s just a business transaction. Sometimes we don’t have to look for someone or something to blame. I wish the best for Dubas and for the leafs organization as they both enter new era.

@@mattdivito3581 What poll results and how many people were polled and who did they pick and what question was asked and what were results ? I find it almost possible to believe that it's a small minority of fanbase that is critical of Dubas. Unless they polled like 1000 people from Guelph and 51% were okay with giving him another chance. He's been there half a decade with stacked skill, huge payroll and nothing but embarrassing and dismal failure.

True, there is always next season, fans always renew their season tickets. The most important issue is to take time to find a competent GM and formulate a long term plan, not Shanaplan 2.0. If that doesn 't work for 7 years, you need an alternative solution, I guess.

It was wrong for them to have hired Dubas as rookie GM of the hottest frying pan of an orginization to start his career and expect him to succeed..The blueprint should be Goalie, Defender, Star Center and Star winger, and build around that...by throwing half the teams salary on 4 forwards..was a boneheaded decision anyone could have saw that right out the gate, anyone who understands this game at least..and their were many who did. Who passes on Hunter and Lamoriello to go with an unproven rookie GM? ...Shanny, which is why he should have been Axed also. Also they need a coach who is going to teach our stars how to play a 200ft game, our core players, i will say 2 of the 4, Matthews and Nylander, who are one dimensional and have been given carte blanche to play this way and it rubs off on the others, sure they can score and pass in the OZ, but in the DZ its like were on the PK because of poor positioning and no defensive aspect to their game it drives me nuts. When i look at a team like vegas who have no huge star players to speak of but even the top ones that they do have lead by example and i watch them play such a positionaly sound 200ft game and think, no wonder they've had success right out of the gate, not to mention how well coached they are. This is what i would like to see the leafs achieve, but they wont untill they can hire a no nonsense GM, who isnt buddy buddy with his players, and a proper coach. Then get, or groom a goalie who can be a bobrovski type and then we will see a team who isnt just good when there is no pressure and then fold when there is, then success will come in the playoffs. We are going to have to part ways( by trade) with at least one of the core 4, and i would say either 1 of the 2 that i mentioned and get a good 2 way centre man who can fill in immediately and a gaggle off prospects and/or high draft picks, and a goalie prospect should be included and go from there...my 2 cents....

lol, are the pens closer, well, they are aging, but they have one of the best coaches, solid locker room. sid still ppg, malkin, and letange. yes, the roster has issues, but if im dubas, good org, that will let me take more power, and he tries to squeeze one run out of these guys before a full rebuild that they let him control. and guentzel is only 28. it;s not like he's inheriting no chance. i'd bet the pens win in the next two years before the leafs...

Of course there is another possibility other than $$ its the autonomy or control, maybe Dubas and Shanny did not see eye to eye on some key issues on the horizon. The idea that Dubas came back and asked for more is a bit too simple an explanation (as is the explanation that Shanny suddenly doubted Dubas' commitment). Probably a bit of truth to all of it. IMO its an overall bad thing for the Leafs. Shanny's era doesnt look like it will end as it started...not well.

I think attacking the sources for Jonas' article misses the point. You can call it insecurity and try to belittle what they're feeling, but Dubas hired and built up a lot of areas in that front office. Flippantly turning around and letting Dubas go when you had a contract ready for an extension puts Dubas' vision for the club in obvious jeopardy, and by extension, all the departments and people he hired. Shanahan and the new GM might completely cut bait with a lot of them, so their worries are not unwarranted.

Who cares where Dumas goes. Dubas only concern in staying with the leafs was money. If that was the deciding factor then the Leafs fans should be very happy that he is gone. Unfortunately for most people only the fans have a passion for the game. For the NHL owners, managers and players it is all about money. Unfortunately sports media are acting like vultures over a dead carcus and they continue speculating over situations that are not relevant. Grow up!

Pittsburgh not so much, not saying they are head and shoulders above the leafs, but they will do constantly better in the long run than Toronto. Toronto is doomed, and long before this. Is it so hard to understand that Dubas might actually be a good person & leader? So much so that people under him actually like him? Maybe Kyper is surpriced because he has never met such person in NHL management level.

@@andrewcrenshaw8093 right but it does not mean that they can come across as being a nice person - which I am sure Kyle Dubas if you were around him probably is . @@andrewcrenshaw8093 You are right. Good person listen to the people they love before making big decision like this. If thats difficult to understand, I guess you have bigger problems than the next employer. I think Dubas wanted more autonomy to make roster related decisions. Whats Shannys job if Dubas has autonomy? Shanny would be the first man out othe door.

What's hard to understand is that anyone watching him perform as a terrible GM for 5 years would be shocked he lost his job or thinking Leafs are losing a great GM. He should've been fired last year. He might be a great guy, unfortunately he wasn't good at his job and in professional sports, results matter more than being a nice guy.

Think Dubas & Matthews could easily work with Sid to bring a Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh. The road for Leafs to get their Stanley Cups is to leave Toronto. What happens with all the Leaf player contracts - if it is true Dubas negotiated contracts with an alleged conflict of interest?

Secondly, he has wrist issues and an injury to a hand/wrist penalized the team long-term. The best Leafs ever never fought. Was a Lady Byng winner twice and only had 117 minutes in penalties in 18 years in the NHL. His name was Dave Keon. Some players are fighters, some are not.
