STATE VISIT: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visit Germany

The Dutch King and Queen were invited to go on a state visit to Germany. Already quite some time ago, because of the covid pandemics. In July 2021 it finally took place, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima spent three days in the German capital Berlin, where they stayed at Hotel Adlon, next to the Brandenburger Tor. At the evening of the first day, the royal couple is invited at Bellevue Castle for a state dinner. Queen Máxima wore a dress of Jan Taminiau and paired it with a smaller setting of the famous tiara with the so called House Diamonds.
On the second evening, the president and his wife are guests at a concert held in their honor at the Konzerthaus. That evening, the well-known crime reporter Peter R. de Vries is shot in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, so that the third day starts in a sad way. King Willem-Alexander felt he had to speak out because of this disastrous news, before starting the last day.

Sadly and strangely easy for our generation to take for granted a friendly state visit from a Dutch king to Germany. They have made peace after a horrific war and occupation. I was so impressed by the king's statement to the press near the end of his visit when he commented on the attack upon journalist DeVries without being smarmy, maudlin, histrionic or appropriating the experience as his own, though we are all diminished by it. It was a simple, clear, pertinent, deeply felt statement of solidarity in a time of such violence.

Maxima had a very good education because her father worked for the Argentine regime while she was growing up. That's why her parents were not invited to her wedding.
