What is a statement end date, start date, or due date? Sometimes the end date can appear to come from after the due date? How is this possible? These designations can be very confusing for those looking at a credit card statement. Let me demystify this for you.

I think maybe all on one day makes it easier to go over if you do not have enough money in the account by accident. If it's spread out then you see it deduct a little at a time. Just a different way of setting things up.

Thanks for that explanation! It’s always been a little confusing, but makes perfect sense now. For example, I have a card that’s due on the 1st, but the statement closing date isn’t until around the 7th. I never realized that i could pay right up to that closing date and have the newest balance still reflect on the next statement (and what they report to credit bureaus). For some reason, i figured that whatever the balance is after the due date is what’s reported. Knowing this is huge. Liked & Subscribed

So a statement date is basically a summery of all the bills and purchases you made the previous month? And a due date is the day in which you have to pay everything off (for the previous month) before you get charged interest?

I hate how the credit cards dates don't really follow my budget dates and how paying by closing date is making me pay for items which can be as far back as a month and a half ago. I have tried to adjust my budget dates accordingly (I just charge to get the 3% back--totally pay off each month but not interested in giving them my money ahead of time.)but have not been able to correlate my dates effectively. Do you have any suggestions of how this can be done without needing a Ph.D. In math? Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy them.

My billing cycle for my capital one secured card was from Aug 8th to Aug 22nd, I paid my minimum payment on 23rd, and I paid the remaining like the next day, now my current balance is at 0, and my credit line is back to full, so since this month's statement is over, can I use my credit card now? Would my next billing cycle for September begin on Sept 8th and end on 22nd or would it begin the time I use it let's say now late Aug, after my statement was processed and the bills paid for Aug 8th to Aug 22nd. It was a 15 day billing cycle. My due date for August is Sept 19th

If you want low utilization, pay before the statement close date (the cutoff date for charges to be included in the billing statement) as that is USUALLY when the information is reported to the credit bureaus. If you check online and you have a 200 dollar balance on a 500 dollar card, paying that down to less than 50 dollars BEFORE the statement closing date will greatly aid your useage. Paying it down after that increases your useage, but keeps you from having to pay interest (or as much interest) or penalties, but you still take a credit utilization hit. Paying by the due date is good, paying by the statement closing date is better

So your due date was referring to the billing month prior, due date is after the statement closing balance. This statement closing you just got is for a new month/billing cycle and you’ll get the new due date for this in a few weeks. If you cleared your balance completely on 19th you will only be charged for money you spent in-between the 19th and 22nd, I hope this makes sense!

So! just got my first cc. My previous statement balance date ended on 9/14 & my next (or first due date) is 10/11. How does a cc company factor in utilization during the first months use?! Say I spend $600 of $1700 avail, should I pay the balance off early say on the 29th or should I pay a portion then and the other half say by the 9th. What do you think would benefit my score the most? I have been told it is best to keep utilization under 30% on the high and 10% or less by the time the card gets reported to the credit bureau but with it being my first month I am a little confused as utilization gets factored in. I hope my question wasnt all over the place. Thanks for all your help!

Utilization is reported on 9/14. You pay most of it on 9/14 down to $2.01. And pay $2.01 on 10/11 for highest credit score. Lower utilization the better but not 0, hence the $2.01.

In Italy as far as I know all the credit cards have to be linked to a checking account for auto-debit, therefore there is no problem in remembering it (since it is automatic). If you want to breakdown a month in multiple payments, you have to log to the credit card home banking within the month in question and configure the payment (but few cards offer this option since almost all credit cards in circulations in Italy are actually charge cards).
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 жыл бұрын
Wow. So interesting. This meaning you must pay the full balance every month. Fair enough and it is actually very good for the consumer to leave out this option of leaning on credit at all.
@MarcoDiFresco
@MarcoDiFresco 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, especially since those few cards that allow payments breakdown do have high APR (more or less the same % you have in the US, as far as I have seen). I do think that charge cards offer the best balance between debit cards and pure credit cards: over debit cards they offer some basic expense deferral (useful if on some month you had more expenses than usual and the debit date is after the monthly wage credit date), but at the same time they are not as potentially indebting as a credit cards.
@Lauren_C
@Lauren_C 5 жыл бұрын
@@MarcoDiFresco In the States at least, annual fees of charge cards (the only ones left here are Amex) are a turn off and the rewards (subtracting a potential annual fee) for lower income people less worthwhile vs using and paying a credit card in full. Omit the annual fee and keep rewards the same (2% or more cash back) and I would have no problem with such a Charge Card.

Timing question to reduce interest accumulation as much as possible: I am paying off a big student loan. I make two payments on it each month. First I pay the minimum payment sometime around the 10th day of the month (due date is the 14th). Then I make a second payment near the end of the month using all extra $ I was able to save and earn during the month. I am guessing that it's best to make that second payment before the statement closing date in order to chip away at interest as much as possible, right? Any advice?

Marietta Watson he's talking about revolving credit. Fixed loans such as student loans are amortized. Interest is already built into the payments. There is no value in timing. The sooner you pay, the more it'll shorten the length of the loan.

It depends how they calculate the interest. Is it based on the average balance of the last 30 days or is it the snap shot balance?

BeatTheBush Hm. The website says it is calculated using "simple intetest" which "will accrue daily based on your outstanding principal balance."

Thanks so much for your video! There is one thing that remains unclear to me, using only 30% of your credit card amount is a rule to attempt to follow between the due date and the statement date or all the time? Thanks for clarifying :-)

Davish Lamburnt Interesting. I get reports from credit karma to avoid variable spending and to keep usage below 10%. Maybe it shows lender risk when moving from 5% to 25% utilization month to month.

Credit card companies will report your utilization when the statement closes. If you have $1000 limit and you pay it down to $0 before the statement closes, it will improve your score compared to $500 reported. Keep your utilization below 30% or better yet 10% to improve your credit score. Your score will fluctuate so it doesn't matter unless you're trying to max your score for a loan or something.

If I'm using my credit card to purchase things and then pay my credit card three days later for those purchases is this a good idea? Also is it good to have a zero minimum balance due each month? I'm a little confuse because if I'm using my credit card and paying it off before the statement date won't I have a zero balance due?
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 жыл бұрын
It wastes your time. If you want the best credit. Pay it down to $2.01 right before the statement date and pay the remainder $2.01 right before the due date. Paying it more often is like spinning your wheels, it does not improve your credit score.

So, if my payment due date was 5/10 and I paid off my bill before that, and my statement closing date is 5/15 am I okay if I charge through my credit card after the payment due date and before the statement close date?
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 5 жыл бұрын
The closing date 5/15 is for the bill AFTER the statement that you paid on 5/10. If you charge between 5/10 and 5/15... that charge will be billed on 6/10.

Question: If i make the FULL payment b4 statement date, I will get a statement with a ZERO amount due. Won't that be perceive as an 'inactive' account for that last billing cycle? How can I build up my payment history, if I'm pre-paying every month(b4 statement date) and all my statements have zero balances? Does the bureau have any clues that I'm pre-paying every month - so the account is NOT inactive?
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 4 жыл бұрын
You want to leave at least $2.01 in there when the statement date hits so you will get a non-zero bill to make sure the card is active that month. You bring it down to $2.01 at minimum to minimize the utilization only if your total credit limit is not that high like a few thousand.

So meaning closing date means that when that date ends they will gather all the information that you bought in that month inside your credit card then they will send a billing price by mail so that u can pay it before the due date? Am i right?
