Hi Lauren, thank you for these videos. I've been watching the ones about SOPs and your feedback on others' essays definitely provided some desperately needed guidance on writing my own. I would love to see a video from you focusing on 'theory' based programs (like theoretical physics and math) as there aren't many examples that I can find online, and I am personally trying to get into a PhD program in pure math.

Thanks for these amazing videos, Lauren! I just wanted ask you one question though: when you write your SOP, do you necessarily have to list your experiences in chronological order? Or is it fine as long as your past experiences are relevant and make a compelling case as to why you are fit for the graduate program?

They don't have to be in order. You probably also can't fit all your experience in an SOP. I generally recommend to pick 1-3 relevant experiences to share in an SOP (depending on the length requirements). Think about weaving together a story of the main highlights of your experience. Your resume is the space for chronological order.

This program only has one essay, rather than a separate personal statement. In that case, you want to add in personal details as well. You can get very personal and vulnerable as long as it is relevant to why you will be a good fit for the program. In this case, this student wants to help students who are at risk of dropping out of college. Since she herself was one of those students and comes from a disadvantage background, that actually makes her a good candidate because she has a better ability to relate to students who are struggling. If she were applying to something else like engineering, these details wouldn't necessarily be relevant.

Yes totally! I've also seen fully funded MEd programs for people in STEM. I recommend trying to do some tangential teaching if you don't have any experience. For example, tutoring or volunteering with youth.
