The Staten Island Railroad is the home of the oldest rapid transit cars in the MTA, namely, the 51 year old R-44.
Here are some great late career shots of these classic 75 foot cars taken at New Dorp Station during October of 2023.
Also included is a great shot of the Laser Train which is a sophisticated track inspector!

Wow those blue lights are bright, must be LED. I have a great pic of these cars at Bay Terrace about 1980, almost new, with the blue stripe.

Cool video 😎 32 big thumbs up 👍 14:03 beautiful view. I lived on Staten Island Eltingville from 1959-1973. I grew up seeing the Verrazzano Bridge being built, and I remember the old New Dorp station was street level with the warning crossing gates on New Dorp Lane and, of course the old Me-1 steel train cars that ran in service from 1925-1973 for the Staten Island Rapid Transit. Thanks again of the history of the R44 cars 😎👍

I used to hear trains all the time further down Vancouver Island, but I don't even hear them anymore.

Wouldnt say its their last days, we still got a good 1-2 years left with them cause the R211S hasnt been fully tested yet nir the crew has been properly trained.

@@RenaissancePeopleNYC Nope simply not possible since the R211S's aren't due to deliver until next year, and they're going to run the R211S alongside the R44's. Even if they take them out of service they will have to be on standby cause we still don't know if the R211S will have the same gearbox issues as the R211A

@@RenaissancePeopleNYC yes. But I heard in March, the R211S will be doing a Revenue Service Testing for 30 Days. Then after that, I wonder how many new trains a month Staten Island will get?

I remember when the R44 was new too. The West End ell on New Utrecht Ave was two long blocks from my house and in the middle of the night you could hear them for miles My father in law used to work the Coney Island shop. Those Diesels are heavy and their wheels would chew up the lathes when they trued them up.

@@nicklocicero3974 oh wow. That's really cool. I can only imagine. But the R44 on Staten Island have been here before I was born along with thousand others on Staten Island. So it's bittersweet with the old Trains leaving and the new Trains coming.
