Absolutely correct Tom. Emphasizing home charging should be the 1st pillar in gaining successful EV sales. Unfortunately, public charging, emphasized by so many, is really a 3rd pillar. What is missing is a strong emphasis on workplace charging for those who cannot charge at home (ie apartments, condos). Charging of several hours should take place at home, overnight, if possible. But those for whom this can't work should be able to charge at their workplace. High-speed, public charging is essential for longer trips, but a poor and inconvenient solution for regular charging.

Well said Tom. From your lips to OEM ears. Did my research before ordering the car. Had my home charger installed before I got the car. Can’t imagine going back to an ICE vehicle. Like others, my main concern is with road trips. When I have to get in a line for a charger, I have flash backs to the gas crisis. This situation can’t get better fast enough. Getting more people to rely primarily on home chargers will definitely help.

Bought my Kia EV6 with no charging equipment. A few months before I helped my neighbor install a L2 charger in his garage for his Ford Fusion Energi. So I borrowed his unused L1 charger for 5 months until I could install my own L2 charger. It took 3 days to charge, but I charged enough nightly that I could drive daily. Then if I was low after a lot of driving I'd use my "free DC charging". Now I only use the EA stations when I'm road tripping. Tom's joking about doing part of the job yourself, but I DIY'ed my install and it went great. Passed inspection. Get a electrical book and research how to do a 240v install. Find out what's needed. Even if you don't want to touch the wire digging a trench and installing pipe properly for your garage saves you a ton of money and is not going to expose you to electricity. Heck you could pull the proper wire and just run it to your panel leaving it next to the panel and hire an electrician to do the final install. Do all the wiring in the garage yourself or just pull the wire loose to the garage.

Tom is absolutely correct in his assessment here. I survived on a 15 amp 110 home charger for my first 2.5 years of ownership. It wasn’t ideal but it was doable for my 26 mile daily commute. I upgraded to 20 amp 210 circuit for the second year. It doesn’t sound like a big improvement. But it made the difference so that I didn’t have to hit a public charger for the 2 to 3 coldest weeks of the year. I now have a 60 amp 210 circuit. It’s awesome. My point is, you don’t necessary need to have a 60 or 80 amp charging situation. Most people could have an excellent experience with a much lower amp connection. So, even if your home doesn’t have 60 amps to spare on your main electric panel, don’t let that stop you. Even a 30 amp 220 would provide an excellent home charging experience for the average owner.

240v 30a is a little slow for my 2022 F-150 Lightning ER (19hrs or so), but the 240v @ 40a I have currently is fine - 14hrs or so for a full charge. That said, 80 amps for that 8hr full charge would be seriously useful for the occasions I need to drive to a client 300 miles away. Here's the problem with a Qmerit installation. Nothing qualifies as a "standard installation", according to the electrician that takes the job. They always want to double dip - get the money from the Manufacturer, and get some extra from the customer. We live in Southeast PA. My friend got a Chevy Bolt with free standard installation. He has a super straight forward 50 foot run from his panel to garage. First "non-standard" job was due to a drop ceiling. So we removed all the tiles and he called Qmerit to get another electrician. Second "non-standard" job was due to an existing unused breaker in the spot where the breaker would go for the charger. He explained that detail but it was not an "unused" spot in the panel. So we removed the breaker, put a cover in the empty spot, and he called for another electrician. The last electrician communicated with him once, and them ghosted him. I believe it was because they could not find any justification for a finding of a non-standard installation. He gave up and got the EvGO credit from Chevy. He still does not have 240v charging at home.

Another factor is the sticker shock after the free charging ends. DC fast charging is expensive versus gas. On a Bolt EUV getting 300 miles on a full charge at 42 cents a kilowatt hour (EA) versus NJ gas $2.75 a gallon. The Bolt EUV is getting is 28 mpg while averaging 4.6 miles per kilowatt hour. During coldest winter days same route I see 2.6 miles per Kilowatt hour with heat set to 80 making efficiency of my 142 mile daily round trip commute 16 mpg.

I'll opportunity charge at times, but I'm mindful of available spaces and wouldn't charge at a crowded site. Driving a green Model S catches folks eyes, so I often have ICE owners stop and ask about the car and charging. I'll ask if they have Duke Energy (which serves a vast portion of NC) because of their EV Charger Prep Credit program. Last month I made a quick pit stop at the Sheetz in Goldsboro that hosts eight NACS Superchargers and charged while I went in (only EV there). When I came out someone charging an older Model 3 rental asked about my ownership experience because he was considering an ICE Audi or a Model 3 Performance. I asked him if he owned his home and if he was a Duke Energy customer. He had no clue about their program, which provides up to a $1117 bill credit toward the EV charger install costs and any electrical home upgrades tied to the install. Ford giving high (very high ) powered chargers with installation is great, but most people don’t need more than a 7 kw charger. In 2011 I purchased a Chevy Volt, and had a level 2 30 amp EVSE. When I upgraded to my 2018 Tesla model 3 I thought “I’m going to need to upgrade to a 60 amp circuit. I continued using my 30 amp EVSE, and learned I don’t need more than that. There needs to be a way to teach people to only charge what they need for each day, or better yet for the trip they will be going on. I realize it’s different with a Tesla, because the car will tell you where to charge, and how long to charge (usually 15 to 20 minutes) to reach your destination, or next charger to continue the trip. And when in a trip needing a charge, with SuperChargering, you know the charger will work 95+% of the time. Thank you for all the work you do, and I always enjoy your KZbin shows.

Yep, I installed a 60 amp circuit when I got my model 3 thinking it was sooo important. It was not. Yeah, it's so inefficient, you'll probably want that 60+ Amp circuit if you're commuting over 100mi/day. If you're driving more than 200 miles a day, probably best to make sure there's a good DCFC around you or along your normal route. I always make sure I get home with ~15-20% in case I really need to go somewhere right away I can stop at a supercharger along the way.

@billybobbob3003 At least for the time being, people that can't charge at home probably shouldn't be purchasing an EV. I wouldn't have purchased my lightning if I had to depend on public chargers.

Excellent initiative. I believe there is one more step to take when influencing these manufacturers. Since so many are starting to use Tesla fast charging the variety of locations of the charge port can cause issues at Tesla superchargers. Taking up 2 or more charging spaces happens so the cable can reach the charge port. Any manufacturer that strikes a deal with Tesla should relocate the charge port for all future production to the left rear corner of the car. This way they can back in and only use 1 space and not block adjacent chargers. Tesla should require it.

This development is a game changer, I recently purchased a 2023 lightning last August. I received a free 80 amp home charger, only to realize that my current 200 amp electric panel was at its maximum capacity and I was not able to safely add an additional 80 amp breaker. The additional cost to upgrade my electric service to a 400 amp panel was nearly $5,000 dollars. I wish that Ford would reimburse me for this cost. Crazy expensive and truly made the entire purchase/experience stressful/untenable. My thoughts

Ford's Power Promise is a great incentive but it sucks it's through Qmerit. I know they are a sponsor of the channel, but they will bend you over when it comes to any added costs (longer runs, bigger wire, trenching). You will likely pay out of pocket as much as (or more than) a local electricain would have charged you for the entire job without Ford's contribution. I agree with you about disincentivising fast charging. People are just replicating the gas experience (which sucks), never really understanding the true benefit of an electric car (always waking up to a car that has fueled itself overnight). The $2000 alternate incentive, on the other hand, sounds nice. Stacked with A/Z plan, the Tesla Conquest offer, retail cash, 'low interest' cash, and the tax credit- Lightning comes in cheaper than the gas version.

Tom, you say Ford/Qmeritt will cover the install 100%(if in the same structure, no digging is needed) etc.. I will believe it when I start seeing it. As you know, with the Chevy Bolt, they had a similar program, but stated "Basic install" was covered. As you know, there were a many stories about how Qmerit installers started not labeling it a "basic" install. Lets hope Ford does better.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney3 ай бұрын
It's a different program with different rules. This program doesn't have the same "basic installation" guideline. Perhaps Ford took notice of some GM customer complaints and tightened up the installation rules.
