The competition format caused the problem. The Supporters shield winner should actually be more deserving because they are obviously a better team all season than a 8th position team that might end up winning the MLS cup. I think league champions should be decided by who has the most pooints teams face each other twice. And the cup should be a separate thing, like in most of the rest of the world. I do understand that not every team faces each other in MLS, but they don't in the cup either. And the PROBLEM with the cup is that a weaker team can much more easily win it by getting lucky. Especially when its single ellimination format.
