#Twi #Akan
In this lesson, we look at some Twi vocabulary items relating to people’s states, feelings and emotions.
The list covered in this lesson will be used later in the Common Twi Expressions series to actually ask people how they are feeling, as well as answer such questions. But, for the present lesson, we are just going to cover the vocabulary list.

Right now: m’ani agye 🙂 When I first saw your face: it’s not on the list. How do you say affection? Like, not romantic love, but liking someone, feeling affection for them? How do you say gratitude? Is there a word in Twi to express the feeling you have when you feel like you recognize someone, you know them even though you’ve never met them before? Different question: often sounds are written “a” but pronounced “Ɛ". Is that because of English influence?
@learnakan
@learnakan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosine, 'seesei ara' = 'right now'. To say you like or have an affection for someone, you say 'm'ani gye wo ho'. 'ayɛ' = 'gratitude'; 'ayeyie/nnaaseɛ' = 'thanksgiving/gratitude (the act of)' We do have different expressions for the feeling you describe about thinking you know someone when you haven't really met them, but I don't know of a single word for it. Maybe I'll cover the options in a part two of this lesson. Thank you. Regarding the 'a' sound, there is a video lesson dedicated to that and two other vowels that have different sound realizations. Please search our videos for the one titled 'The a, e, and o vowels'. I think it will help.

Sorry Joanna, your question isn't too clear. If you could explain further? Thank you.
@joannaow6549
@joannaow6549 6 жыл бұрын
@@learnakan you said ɔtan is the noun meaning hatred and tan is the verb to hate. So if I am to say He hates rice...Ɔno before a verb is left with Ɔ, therefore do I say Ɔtan ɔmo or is it conjugated another way to avoid ambiguity? I hope you do get me now please.
@joannaow6549
@joannaow6549 6 жыл бұрын
And also for ɔdɔ=love(n) and ɔdɔ=He loves. Now I know how to indentify a noun when it is followed by 'no' as I learnt in a previous lesson of yours. So should I follow that rule to differenciate between the noun and verb in this case...ɔtan ne ɔdo?
@learnakan
@learnakan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanna, thanks for the clarification. Oh I now get your question clearly, and it's a very good one. I think I'm going to treat it in a Q&A. But let me explain it briefly here for you. Indeed, both the spelling of such nouns and the subject pronoun+verb conjugated forms are the same IN WRITING. E.g. 'ɔdɔ' can be the noun 'love', as well as 'he/she loves', 'ɔtan' can be 'hatred', as well as 'he/she hates', 'ɔpɛ' can be the noun 'like/liking', as well as 'he/she likes', etc. But the similarities are only in writing. And even in writing, context will always distinguish between the two. For instance, if I write 'ɔtan Kofi', it cannot possibly be 'hatred Kofi' that I'm writing about. Neither would 'ɔdɔ n'abusua' be intended to be translated as 'love (n) his/her family'. But, one key difference between the two is realized when speaking. And this has to do with tone. You know Akan is a tone language, so the slightest difference in tone of the same word may result in a totally different word. Generally, the noun forms of the examples you give would have the second syllables ('tan' and 'dɔ') being high in tone and the same syllables in the pronoun+verb conjugated forms being low in tone. I will definitely do a Q&A on this so you and other learners get to hear the difference in sound. But I hope this, at least, tells you where the difference is. This is a brilliant question. Thank you very much.
