I've always been loathe to just go with what's thought to be correct, and so before having a moving bed I searched to see if there had been any proper academic research into their efficacy. An example study which sent the same amount of waste to a number of both static and moving beds found that the static beds had a larger amount of bacteria on it than the moving bed did, however ammonia was lower in the moving beds than the static. As you found, static will collect detritus better than moving, so whether or not you move a bed or not will depend on your priority for it - if you want more effective bio filtration then move it, if you want more mechinical than keep it still! Both will still do the other either way. If yu've not go any other media that's primarily moving, I'd be prone to keeping it aerated. What I would say is that to aid the mechinical filtration of static k1 even more, I added grids above it in each of the bays I have it in. These are below water level and mean that the k1 is squashed together a little as water flows upwards through it (like you say, making it tempest-like). Have you thought about a seive rather than a bead or tempest - I'd really like one, but I've nto got the room.

Hi Andy . Without dropping any names , I asked this very question to one of the country`s leading koi experts and basically they told me that the strains of beneficial bacteria that live on moving beds are different to the ones that live on static beds . Therefore , to maximise your filter systems potential , ideally , you`d have both . That probably explains why many people run a moving bed and shower set-up . As for running K1 as mechanical filtration , it probably depends on your set-up . If you have a drum , for example , in theory it should take out all the waste , and nothing , or very little , should get through to your bio-filter . Obviously , if you run your own filter with static K1 in the last chamber , you`ll be able to check if its picking anything up .

depending on how your filter is setup you need to have a way to drain off the crap off the K1 without it running through the filter box and back into the water colum the old school barrel filter method uses 3 or more 45gl drums set up with a static to pull out the solids and 1 or more moving for the moving beds for the airobic bactia and then a return to help settle out anything that got through with the filter your running you are limited on how and what you can do to add different kind of beds for either removing solids or growing biologicals it all boils down to how much time and effort you want or can afford to spend on maintaining the system your setup would need a full overhall to gain a better balance of time spent to results your trying to achieve first of all id make a list of what you want from your filtration system then a list of what works well from each reqirements desired this is why the ones that can afford and have the space run drum filters and moving beds run those systems the ones running on a budget run a bead with moving bed and then you have some that run wetland filters and plants its finding that right mix of cost, maintaining time, space its the same formula weather you have a 10ltr goldfish tank or 20k gal pond any filter is only as good and the time, money, space it takes up to the enjoyment it gives at the end of the day

Nice video Andy, and one that I have been giving thought to myself. I am thinking my filters lack enough static surface, as I am basically mechanical with filter floss/wool and then straight in to my fluid K+ bed. So have decided to use good old filter brushes in the 1st barrel with the filter wool, see of that gives any benefit…. 🤞🏼 👍🏼

People over think when it comes to anything koi imo. The only thing that matters is are the water parameters OK. I've never used a moving filter, and if many koi keepers looked at my filtration they will wonder why they spent so much money on theirs or how can my filter possibly work, doubting it does actually work. It works because I didn't over think and didn't stress about it or listen to people trying to make commission. I have a more natural pond system, it's has Lillie's, some weed and a couple of margin plants. I did a full drain down and clean out this year for the first time in 14 years. I was expecting to find lots of sluge but there was surprisingly little considering a maple tree sheds its leaves into it every year. A lot can be said about just letting a pond do what it will do without too much interference. Creating an ecosystem is much less work and less stress in the long run.

Great video, makes a Friday night worth while. I have static K1 in one of my bays but they are in 3 large sacks, bit like those that carrots or onions come in bulk, they collect loads but are really easy to clean by rinsing in pond water then straight back into the bay. I also have a moving bed filter in a large 200l barrel after my Kockney filter before going back to the pond. Its an easy way to use K1 in both scenarios.

Hey good morning, since i watch here from time to time now I need to type something to it. First of all K1 is never mechanicl filter media...... like wtf are u retraded u make a media with high surface to collect mud, and waste ? So static Filter means less eenrgy use, kinda smart at this day and age, also a Static chamber cen hold up 3 times the media so at th end u even have more surface that can be used, in moving bad u only use the inside of the media outside bacteria gets crushed grinded all the time so ur moving bed is like a fuckig meet grinder prudocing 24/7 small shit..... , and obviously u use air Pump too in static (mamuthpump effect) rising air is taking water with it even better for more flow over your media. But you should use bigger Helix doesnt clook up and easyier to clean after a season or 2. Like fo rel how can a single Person say K1 is for mechanicalfiltration crete a plastic object with max surface for bacteria and u people say mechanical..............pleaseeeeeeeeeee. Using Media in a Sack is ike useless..... water allways goes the easiest way it doesnt go ohhhh there is no bacteria move there.....(also there is Diffusion... Diffusion Although you may not know what diffusion is, you have experienced the process. Can you remember walking into the front door of your home and smelling a pleasant aroma coming from the kitchen? It was diffusion of molecules from the kitchen to the front door of the house that allowed you to detect the odors. Diffusion is defined as the net movement of molecules from an area of greater concentration to an area of lesser concentration. The molecules in a gas, a liquid or a solid are in constant motion due to their kinetic energy. Molecules are in constant movement and collide with each other. These collisions cause the molecules to move in random directions. Over time, however, more molecules will be propelled into the less concentrated area. Thus, the net movement of molecules is always from more tightly packed areas to less tightly packed areas. Many things can diffuse. Odors diffuse through the air, salt diffuses through water and nutrients diffuse from the blood to the body tissues. but takesmore timeto explain that.... and sorry engis not my native language

hey just saw the Ph Video, just a small INfo and super Intresting, but we all should know that ph kh and co2 are allways togteher its a devil circle if u chance one of them u change the others, u can even make math with it and calculate each of them if u know the others. just as an example ifu are blasting air and air and more air your pond u can rip it apart because we are feeding air not 100% oxygen into it atleast 98% of us. The data u gathered with ph and kh u have 0 co2 left in pond. Every fish has a co2 level in his own body, if u rise it so fucking high real bad for fish most of the time people say parasite because fish will rub and jump and scratch everywhere. Also when ur tap has kh7 and the Pond had kh4 that only means way to less water chages its called biogene entkalkung algae and bacteria split the carbon to reproudce.

Hi Andy, I have 2 bead filters on my pond and I love them. I back flush them once every month using a vacuum cleaner in blow mode to agitate the bead as it’s a cheaper option, and it works really well. The pond water is crystal clear all the time. The other benefit of bead filters are bacteria live on the beads inside the filters.

I have already k1 static in first bay with flow entering in at he bottom where you drain waste, non vortex fitted with radial flow settler in place to slow force of water entering and disturbing waste chamber. 2nd bay k1 moving, 3rd jap matting 4th jap matting. Am thinking of building up not out like you stated on video, so second 4 stage bay above so I can have Alfa grog and other media that would not need cleaning as often just the bottom bays. I’m a thinker out side the box, you are already using the space but not above, my set up is in a small shed that’s the idea. Some food for thought. Keep up the good work👌

Hi Andy, in my opinion Wrighty’s three barrel system (2 static followed by 1 moving bed) plus a shower. Does everything really well. Much less maintenance than your current set up and more efficient. So much so I’m considering replacing my drum with one after 7 years because things are starting to go wrong that are expensive to put right. Example oase drum motor nearly £500 .

The simple answer is a static bed is more mechanical filtration and moving is more bio filtration. So in the summer when your feeding heavy you may need the extra bio. When not feeding heavy you can go static.

A static media filter is probably not anaerobic due to the amount of water passing through the media. Keep doing the experiments. A shower etc and maybee a moving bed will offgass some of the stuff that usualy needs diluting through waterchanges. One of your japanese matting could be replaced with moving bed media. So the filter array could look like: -k1 micro static -japanese matting aerated -k1 aerated Eirik

@@KoiPondLifestyle I would drill a hole and install a ball valve or a gate valve with a restrainer to catch the K1. You can also use a pump to suck the muck out if you don't want to drill a hole. Beat the static K1 with a garden brush before you do your draining and you're golden. This is also my plan when I decide to upgrade my filter. I have 3 cubic yards of K1 on the way.
@Alex_Correa
@Alex_Correa Сағат бұрын
You don't "remove the oxygen from the filter bed" by stopping the movement on K1 media. You can turn off the AIR SUPPLY or water pump towards the bed to make it static. That doesn't mean necessarily that you will "turn off the oxygen" and it will become anaerobic. Not at all. The way K1 needs to be set up is to run clean from debris. You need to place one or several mechanical filtration pads to remove excess detritus BEFORE you drive the water to the K1 chamber. The K1 is supposed to me a biological filtration media, not mechanical. Of course you can use as mechanical. You can do whatever pleases you, but it was designed to be a biological media, free of any detritus. You are using it wrong. The simple fact that your test kit shows ammonia and nitrite tells us that you do not have enough media to process the amount of bioload and/or food you are adding to the pond. There is no direct correlation to what your suppose experiment will bring to any of the surface of ideas you suggest. Static will not necessarily have less dissolved oxygen in that chamber. It will depend on the design. Aerobic and anaerobic are not direct related to static or moving. You must have too many fish for the amount of water and for the surface area of your filtration system. You need to e design you filtration. And perhaps feed less?

New regulations for CCTV came in so its a good idea to check cameras if you have them on the pond or house. • CCTV camera must be placed between 2.4 meters and 2.6 meters above the ground. • The CCTV use in this instance must only be for domestic purposes such as improving the security of an individual residence or the personal security of that person and must not be used for public space surveillance. • The CCTV use in this instance must never be used to carry out surveillance of a neighbouring property or an individual in that neighbourhood. It must not be intrusive or be used to harass or intimidate others. • The CCTV can only be used to survey your own property, including sole use gate, garden etc. • The CCTV must not be installed where it will cover common parts such as shared gardens, gates, stairs, doors, pathways etc. However, where there is a little amount of incidental wider coverage, such as where the CCTV is installed for a sole usage front entrance and covers a small portion of a shared area, this may be permissible and will be considered on a case by case basis. • Failure to comply with the data protection obligations may result in regulatory action being taken by the ICO as well as potential legal action by the affected individuals. • Audio recording is discouraged. Where audio or video footage are retained, this should be for a defined period of time and not indefinitely. Audio and CCTV recordings can only be lawful in certain circumstances.

Static bed should be at the beginning of your filter system for mechanicaly removing waste, moving bed should be at the end of the system as it isn't filtering particles but is so the bacteria can treat the clean water passing through it, done this way the moving bed should hardly if ever need cleaning. Also in a moving bed any bacteria that dies is knocked off and replaced with new bacteria.
