This video shows some tests done on static ropes going over a sharp
edge with an 85kg suspended Dummy being swung from side to side to
simulate a realistic working scenario. As always ropes must be well
protected from sharp edges, off the shelf rope protectors may not be sufficient.

There was a rope access fatality in the North Sea a couple of months ago, both ropes were cut by a sharp edge. The Exact details haven't been released but a video was published by a third party that showed a similar set up to ours but both ropes were cut in only a couple of pendulums which freaked a lot of people out This video was aimed to restore some faith whilst highlighting the short comings of the rope protectors currently in use. We now have better rope protectors with steel mesh.

Thanks guys. A big lesson for us was that rope prrotectors should be considered as PPE for ropes, i.e. a last line of defence. The current products are less than ideal so we are currently testing other options and materials. Will post the results once completed.

Well done, a better representation of how a rope can be damaged and a simplistic but very efficient solution. IRATA should post this on their newsletter

A little bit confused here? Isnt it completly obvious that if you rig your ropes over a "sharpened aluminium plate" there gonna snap? Apart from that, for what reason would you be swinging from side to side like that? Nevermind rig the ropes in that position in the first place. The dummy's shunt was also out of arms reach, meaning the back up rope was rubbing more than usual on the plate. On a positive note, the rigging with wires was very good. A simple deviation would also do it.
