Statistics 101: Point Estimators.
In this video, we dive into the beginning of inferential statistics; the ability to estimate population parameters using sample data. The sample mean, sample standard deviation, etc. are point estimators for the population mean and standard deviation. But they are not perfect. We use a simple example in statistical quality control to explore this topic. Enjoy!

Brandon, these videos are so great !!! You have saved me. I'm in Honor's Statistics at university, but I've NEVER had stats before so it has been very confusing trying to learn all of the terms and formulas. I didn't know when I registered for the class it would be so difficult. I'm a 98 and 99 math kind of gal, but this stuff is tough. With your help, I finally get it ! Thank you a million times over for the way you structure your videos. You are a God send.

If is a single population then the rule of thumb is a sample size between 30 and 100; that is all you need due to diminishing returns of adding more. Beyond that, I think about the smallest way I might slice my data. If I need to conduct analysis on: 1) women, 2)between 30-39 years old, 3) non-smokers, 4) from Bristol, England, then I need to sample large enough to get at least 30 meeting that characteristic. There is no real loss in an overly large sample beyond time and money.

I like the video and think it is very helpful for beginners and know you mention it in the beginning in the video, but it would help if you also put that this video is for beginners in the title, because I am doing econometrics and was hoping you would actually explain what a point estimator is in detail.

Hi Aabi! The sampling distribution is a theoretical collection of many point estimators, in this case many sample means (a point estimator). So we could take the average height of 30 adult men and get a sample mean (point estimator for the entire population of men). Repeat (another point estimator). Repeat. Repeat. If we put all those means into their own distribution, we have the sampling distribution.

Great work. I am preparaing for an exam of quality engineering. And ur videos relly helped me in undrstandibg the basic concepts. But aftr watching all these, i am bit confused. I did not undrstand that when should we consider sampling distribution. If it is used for making estimates about poulation then what is the purpose of point estimators, as they also do same thing. How to know that which method should be used at what place and why. Waiting fr ur response. Thanx
