I have a statistics professor that almost did not go over vocab or explanations of equations at all while working full-time, taking 13 credits and paying for my schooling out of pocket. So it means a lot to me when I don't accomplish my goals in a class and I don't have much free time to do "self-teaching". THIS VIDEO HELPED ME OUT SO MUCH AND I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS GUY PUTTING THIS UP. I would donate money to this guy if I had a way to.

My Statistics book just threw out that standard deviation formula from nowhere and refused to explain the "n-1" part until much later, and then Professor Leonard derives it in like 5 minutes and justifies "n-1" right away. Amazing.

Before, I was thinking that statistics was not for me and that I was not good at it. Now, I really like it, and I enjoyed the course for the first time. Truly appreciate your work. I am so happy to have found your videos. I spent entirely to long trying to loathes and you taught this to me in 51 minutes and 45 seconds. I spent countless hours trying to figure this out. My instructor isn't really teaching us, just power points. Its very ineffective for me, I need to be shown how to do stuff and explained why things are done. You are excellent. You are not at all boring. Thank you!!! All "A" student here quickly going to lower B's and being frustrated...I will be getting my grade back up with your help!

For anyone interested, at 56:12 he says there isn't a corollary equation for the population standard deviation equation he wrote on the board, but there is. You basically derive it the same way he derived the alternate sample standard deviation. Sal's video helps explain that kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYO5eJaPfM-IoZo

If we do the actual reality math it’s a different value. The actual differences between x and the mean are5,3,8 which total 16. Then divide by 3 to get the average of the distances. As you see doesn’t come out to 7. Reality doesn’t equate to formula.

Great video prof, but I think the explanation for why we use the squared the difference between the data value and the mean in calculating the standard deviation is a bit off. Negative data point and a positive mean doesn't cancel each other out. For example, consider a data point of -6 and a mean of 6, then (x - x_bar) would be (-6 - 6) which is -12. So it doesn't justify why we can't use absolute value instead of squaring it to get a "positive" distance. Actually, the calculation using an absolute value even has its own name, called the "mean deviation". It is just that the squared version has nicer mathematical properties and therefore more commonly used. There's an interesting discussion on the mathematic stackexchange for this, just try to google it!
