For all those knockers who used to deride Quo as just a 12-bar blues/boogie band - this song has everything: a key change, multiple tempo changes, a quiet interlude, a time-signature change, some brilliant Irish Jiggery, even dual guitar harmonies! And rocks like hell! What more could you want!

I think that the band was completely wrong to refuse to play this epic tune live - a massive mistake. One of their best tunes.
@BandsThatRock3 жыл бұрын
I think the reason is because Rossi wasn't able to play it live, certain guitar parts on this song were recorded onto a tape running at half speed and then it was played back at normal speed when recorded onto the album
@GARYBLONDER3 жыл бұрын
@@BandsThatRock That's genuinely really interesting. However I don't buy it as an excuse. Lots of bands do this kind of thing but they still manage to adapt the song for a live performance. I honestly think that Rossi's motive was that it would be too much like hard work. But if Lynyrd Skynyrd can play Freebird live there's no excuse to avoid Slow Train
@BandsThatRock3 жыл бұрын
@@GARYBLONDER Possibly, there's also the fact that they already had two 12 minute plus songs in their set, (45 Hundred Times & Roadhouse Blues), and this may have had a bearing on making their setlist.

rossi just sang so much better then it seemed more natural .like this real quality to his voice .he sounds kind of annoying in later years . just no real tone to his voice. there really is no understanding how they went from sublime serious rock to poppy cringe . his guitar playing was brilliant then as well ,such a quality biting telecaster tone ,and quality melodic soloing with his own unique phrasing .. hes off his head is rossi like ..to think that later throwaway dross is better than the 70s quo .

After "Lonely Man" this was not to be expected! In my opinion one of the greatest and most heavy songs they ever wrote! Worse to be put on their 1976 Live record - side by side to "4500 Times" and "Roadhouse Blues". I had the "Quo" album for a longer time back in the early 1980s (years after its original release) when i first realised what for an unbelievable masterpiece was hidden on "Side 2" as the final track on this super-classic album. Heard it over and over again afterwards. Closed the door of my room, Volumes up, putting out my "air-guitar" and rockin' and bangin' as hell! Untill my parents flipped out and forced me to turn down the volume!!!! There was this insane drum-solo going over into the brutal straight heavy riffing which made me go insane! This song IS FOREVER. A masterpiece over and over! Then "Side B" ended and i was asking myself.....what ever should come from Quo after they did such greatness????? But "On the Level" and "Blue for you" was still ahead.......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings from germany.

This album Quo, Hello, Piledriver, Blue for you and to some extent On the level, Ma Kelly , and Dog were tremendously good, Rocking all over the world could have been a lot better due to production, same as If you cant stand the heat , Whatever you want was back to form, as was Just Supposin. Never too late was left overs from the previous album and not too good .After John bailed out it went wrong 1982, Back to Back not good, moribund, it was never the same with those session musicians!
@cmccormick68792 ай бұрын
The John Eden remix of the Rockin’ All Over The World album is much better than the original album release. You’re right though - it and If You Can’t Stand The Heat suffered from massive over production.

The news of Quo not being able to play this in their set (On the comments here anyway) is confusing. Status Quotes (Dutch tribute Video attached here) version is proof that Quo could easily have put it in their set, and to top it off, Status Quotes blend if perfectly with Someones Learning. Quo were always thinking of new novelty ideas of staying relevant (eg Aquostic/Frantic 4 Reunion/4 gigs in a day/Pub tour etc etc). A great idea, even now with all the new band members, would to be to play a whole set on the unplayed, or at least seldom played songs. Besides Slow Train, I would utter Too Far Gone, Riverside, Somethings goin on in my head, Break the Rules (Another from the Quo album that was mysteriously ignored live) I should have known etc and then theres the softer songs like Where I am, Who am I, For you, Unspoken Words, A Year etc. Another novelty idea of the Quo would have been to release a full on Blues album of the Greats (eg Willie Dixon, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed etc) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJeTgWWjiLKDos0

They play the song in a medley in the early 90,s ,,but it would be much better if they play the whole song live,,I can't see no reason why the current members can do it, They should know that,,Richie Malone,,brilliant guitarists,,doesn't imitate Rick,Rhino does play brilliant bass,Andy can just about do anything, Leon Cave a superb drummer and of course the ever talented Mr Francis Rossi,,,but remember this,,,the original Quo from the 70,s was the best ,,,Alan Lancaster is a General of the band,and plus once more the best shuffle drummer in the world is John Coghlan....so why can't Quo give Slow Train on their set lists of songs Dougie W.Australia in a small town of Dowerin

I ask the question of should a band carry on when the hits dry up? The "best" days were 40 years ago etc or does it cement the legacy by still going? I adore SQ from the early 70's still had some good tunes later but I often wonder given Rossi's music taste seems nothing like the Quo sound.

Anything after, and including Rockin' All Over The World, Quo seemed to run out of ideas. However, the writing was really on the wall when Lancaster left the band in '85. He was the "rocker" of the band, Rossi was the melodic, poppy member...I mean "Living On An Island" "In The Army Now" or "Tequila Sunrise?" Total and utter dross and I believe Lancaster got fed up clashing with Rossi over this kind of material and baled out.
@nickwilliams10653 жыл бұрын
@@BandsThatRockLol. Your not wrong there bud, I wasn't a huge fan of Blue for you, but stuck with them as the stuff they had done till then was great and to me stands up to almost any thing of that era. What came after, well, luckily for me I had left them behind before they started their ABBA faze but I had a lot of mates who hung in there a while longer, so I got to hear some of the dross through them. Great band live always gave 110% saw them live several times each tour from 72 to 79 and they were bang on each and every time. The live album stands up against any other live one ever made, they nailed that one. Those where the days, hey!!!!! Stay safe.

I think that Lancaster was the glue to keep them on their original course but he was a bit of a hard nut and when he left, ( was invited to leave ) that's when it all changed for me, not all bad but certainly not for the good.
