Sooooo, hello my Friends!!!
It's been 6 months since i upload my last video.
I didn't expect that my break in planemaking will be so long.
At this moment finally i can say - yes, i'm back!
In today's episode i'm gonna make something special - classic strike block plane with intermittent boxing. The plane is purposed to work on the engrain surface. As you know endgrain surface of the wood is the most durable for friction, so the sole of wooden plane can be damage quickly. Because of that i'm gonna use small pieces of boxwood, and glue them into the sole of the plane. Notice the grain direction of the boxing, they will be perpendicular to the sole, that detail will keep durable of the sole for years of using.
For this project i'm gonna use:
- piece of smoked black locust for the body
- log of boxwood for the wedge and the boxing
- padauk and maple veneer inlay (just for fun)
- my hand tools
- my hands
- my head ;)
I hope you like how the plane will works!
At the end of the video i got small surprise for you :)
Thank you!
If you have any questions or sugestions just write a comment.
Enjoy!
Btw. Sometimes you asked me about plans of my planes, but i'm really sorry, i have them only in my head.. Maybe some day i'll put them on the paper or digital version. Today i don't have a time for it.

Witajcie moi przyjaciele!
Minęło 6 miesięcy od przesłania mojego ostatniego filmu.
Nie spodziewałem się, że moja przerwa w planowaniu będzie tak długa.
Dzisiaj wreszcie mogę powiedzieć - tak, wróciłem!
W dzisiejszym odcinku zrobię coś specjalnego - klasyczny strug typu strike block z okresowym boksingiem.

Totally awesome!,I got the plane making book 😁!, I started one a lot like this...Black walnut with strait,non dovetailed beech strips.... Took me a whole day to insure no gaps, Then I started drilling the mouth,came up from the bottom on each side,then realized 😤I forgot to mark extra space for the cheeks. So I have to re-do,that brings me to a question please: When joining different wood species,like what you did in this video, Do the density’s of the 2 woods have to be similar ?....or is it fine to join wood that’s Very different in density? Example: Boxwood Janka hardness is over 2000 pounds, Black walnut is only 1000 pounds Do these differences matter in regards to “movement in service” in a situation like what’s in your video?
@StavrosGakos
@StavrosGakos 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andrew! Thats great that you are trying to build a plane! You asked me about density of the wood for boxing. It should be more density that the wood used for the body of the plane but more important thing is grain direction of the boxing. It is perpendicular to the sole (end grain pieces are showed from the sole side). End grain is always much harder/durable than any other side of wood. Good luck!

Nice plane, well done. But could you use a sharp pencil? Seriously, a dull marking pencil is just creating errors you have to correct. :P I'm curious if you left material on the sole for flattening, with regards to your finished mouth width? You "snap-transitioned" that part. I always find it interesting how western wooden planes have grain oriented concave upwards and Japanese planes place the grain sideways. It makes more sense to me sideways, as the grain movement will not affect the holding of the blade. Whereas the western planes place the entirety of the plane's mechanical workings on the exact plane that will expand and contract, loosening the blade or tightening it till the body forms cracks. Certainly something to consider both sides of.
@StavrosGakos
@StavrosGakos 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, flattening was preety simple. I never leave some extra material on the sole. I don't care about sharp pencil, every line have right and left side ;)

I can clearly see that the strike block plane works very well on endgrain, there’s no question there. My question is why is it so good? Should a shooting plane also have a strike block? I know I use my shooting board for end grain most of the time.
@StavrosGakos
@StavrosGakos 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, the answer is simple - the cutting angle is extremely low. The construction of metal low angles planes allows to get the lowest cutting angle about 37 deegrees (bed 12 plus bevel 25). In wooden strike block planes the blade is bevel down, so the cutting angle is the same as the bed. My shooting plane is strike block plane with 33 deg bed and the bed is paralel, so the real cutting angle is about 32 deg. 5 deg makes the difference 🙂

Gosh, that shop is so clean... The shopmade saw-files, and the blunt chisel-scraper are innovative. Black locust is a very hard wood, so what is the function of the boxwood inserts in the sole? Do they keep the sole flat, against the warping effects of the growth ring orientation?

Does anyone know why the grain orientation is parallel woth the sole instead of perpendicular?
@StavrosGakos

Because the plane is purposed to work with end grain. The end grain is the most durable for friction so without that boxwood boxing the plane sole will get damage very quickly.

Very nice btw. Couple of things I’ve never seen the saws/files you took out the sides to depth, I’m assuming you made them yourself. One with push stroke one with pull? And the negative angle on the chisel, looked like -5 degrees I’m assuming it acts like a scraper? Never seen that before.

Thank you Scott! That saws/file are called floats, planemaking floats. They are made in push and pull version to work with bed and abutments (push on the bed, pull on the abutments) without tearout. The blunt chisel technique came frome Bill Carter, on his yt channel you can find whole video about it. Regards!

Wow you learn something everyday. Just looked them up and again wow. Lie Neilson floats, very nice. Flat narrow edge. Looks like a cross between a rasp a file and a saw. I’ll check out the blunt chisel technique. Love old planes, I work in a college teaching joinery and have some coffin shaped smoothing made by Mathieson. Some rebate too. Loads of old planes. I’m from Glasgow and love anything Mathieson. I have a few old 1850s chisels. Love the cast steel. Holds a nice edge. They don’t make tools like that anymore. Well you do but not mass produced. You get a sub from me btw. Love your work.

Glad to see you again in the new big shop. Nice build as always. First time I see a "chisel scraper" and that drywall-style "saw rasp". Are they an invention of yours? I hope you the best and thank you for inspire me.

Dla mnie jesteś Mistrzem świata w struganiu strugów ;) Przypadkowo trafiłem na Twój film, ale nie bylem w stanie się oderwać. Gratuluję zdolności manualnych no i oczywiście pomysłów na nowe projekty. Sam zaczynam swoją przygodę ze stolarstwem od kilku lat. Uczę się powoli głównie z internetu przelewając swoje pomysły na amatorskie projekty. Twój kanał będzie pod moja baczną uwagą. Pozdrawiam i życzę dużo sukcesów.

Stavros - beautiful plane and works great on the end grain, just found some beach billets for the plane you have inspired me to build. Why hide glue for the inserts? You usually seem to go with a TItebond equivalent.

This is a beautiful plane. Is the skew blade better at endgrain than a low angle approach? I've always seem low angle used on endgrain (and my current planes are LA, bevel up), although I have noticed that with a wood like Black Walnut, even the low angle isn't enough to prevent nasty tearout at the of the board. Seeing you build all these bevel down planes is making me reconsider them compared to the bevel up ones I currently use.
