Hello everyone! In this episode i'm gonna build a tiny smoothing plane. As the material i'm gonna use very interesting piece of wood, wich was posted to me by Taylor. He describes it as eugenia uniflora. I've never use it before. Google says nothing about this WOOD (i mean the wood, not the tree) so if you have any experience with it just share it with us. As the inserts (boxing) i used boxwood from my collect. It is kind of solutions wich helps to reduce wear of the sole during friction. The grain direction in the boxing is the key - it is perpendicular to the sole (glued with hide glue). It is my own design of boxing - you can find more informations in the descriptions of my other videos. Oh, and the iron - piece of an old and fat laminated plane blade. About 5mm thick. Works very stabile without chattering. As the finish i use one coat of boiled linseed oil plus two coats of osmo 3032. At the and of the video i have small suprise for those who decided to support me in my workshop developing :) Cheers!

Surinam Cherry, pitanga, or Brazilian Cherry are the names I find for Eugenea Uniflora. Seems like a really interesting wood.

Nice work! it is a Myrtacea (perhaps the best known of this family is the Eucalyptus) Many times, knowing a little about the genus or family of the plant can be useful to have a general idea about the characteristics of the wood (obviously it is not a strict rule) They are usually medium to coarse grained woods, medium hardness (there are very hard wood species in that family, but they are not the majority). From what I see, it behaves similar to eucalyptus under tools

I live in a place with a lot of eucalyptus and I kind of have to disagree with you. With all the eucalyptus I've ever used the grain is fairly tight and it planes really smoothly the color is red and white. I may be wrong in the sense that it could be related to eucalyptus but from all the eucalyptus I've cut down and seasoned and worked with it's very hard and dense and fine-grained and quite a bit different from what I'm seeing here. I've never seen this wood before or even heard of it but I'd be interested to learn more

Hi Stavros! It might be desapointing but the wood is not Eugenia uniflora (Pitanga, Surinam cherry), It is native here and Iam very used to work with it. Yhe wood you are using for the plane looks more like a Lophira from Africa. Kind regards from Uruguay.

Eugenia uniflora wood is about the same hardness as citrus wood or European pear. It's a popular hedge plant in South Florida and once or twice a year it produces a cherry-like fruit that is very delicious when it's a reddish-purple color. The wood reminds me of ipe, but a bit more reddish.

I'm from Brazil and 'm well marveled that you even used this wood for it! Eugenia spp. is called "pitangueira", their fruits we call "pitanga" and we eat it, there's delicious juices made with pitangas and cosmetics by Brazilian business Natura... I never thought that pitangueira could be used to do woodworking.... because anyone cut pitangueira trees to do, only to collect fruits. There are several plainted on streets within whole Brazil

The box wood is a much harder wood, so it will wear down much slower. Since its harder than most woods you will work with its very resilient.

Only two points of the plane actually have to touch the surface of the material you are working! To make the plane glide smoother some craftsmen slightly hollow out the wood between the boxing. Basic boxing is always by the mouth and by the heal. Box wood also grows very slowly and stays small, so it would be a waste and very expensive to "shoe" the whole plane.

Hello, nice work as always. Eugenia Uniflora is the scientific name to what is commonly called "Pitanga" in Brazil, it is a little native fruit that I used to eat all the time when I was younger. Strangely I have dealt with quite a lot of different wood species native to Brazil but never heard that the Pitanga tree wood was actually used. How did It hold up? The fruit is very acidic and has a strong and pleasant citric smell, how does the wood smell?

About the wood (ugenia multiflora): it is a tropical tree found in south and central America that produces an edible red berry not unlike a cherry but with riges a bit like a pumpkin. I love the contrasting colors of the woods. I also love how the texture of the woods are so different. The Eugenia unifora looks so porous like you could almost drink through it. Contrasted by the boxwood that is so dense it looks like ivory. Also I love the mallet. I haven’t started mine yet. I did buy the brass bar so I will find some time. Planning on walnut for the head and persimmon for the handle.

Eugenia Uniflora or the Suriname Cherry is listed in the Wiki, but not the wood database. There's some information about the plant, but not the wood it produces. It is CITES listed as "least concern". It's a small tree or large shrub, about 7-8 meters high in the extreme, and conical. There are edible berries, although they don't always taste good. It is in the Myrtle family, a dicot member of the Angiosperms. It grows in South America, from Suriname down to Brazil and including Uruguay and Paraguay and Argentina. It has been introduced into Bermuda and Florida and an ornamental species, but it considered an invasive species. In its native habitat, it is sometimes grown as a hedge. About the wood, the best I can do is what I saw on your video: It is coarse grained and the heart and sap woods are not readily distinguishable. I have no information at all about hardness and how it works. You would know more than I :-)

Bro that's not fair when u do the click of the finger thing.. I want to see how u made this beautiful piece.. I love to see all the work that goes into making a stunning piece of ART!!! like this little 066 Eugenia & I'm also sure the majority of the folks who watch these types of awesome videos will watch it right through.. Back in the 1960's 1970's and I think they were shown up til the mid 1980's here in IRELAND we had hour long shows about the old crafts in my country.. These were the crafts that were handed down through the generations and were in danger of being lost for good.. Things like building original fishing boats racing boats, etc.. Making baskets to chairs and tables in the old way in my country. Thatching roofs, etc.. I could go on but the way u make these little planes is so important to everybody bcos those in the world who love this stuff would like to be able to teach some of the future generations how to.. I love the style of ur little 066 Eugenia bro.. I salute u Sir aND i MEANT NO DISRESPECT BY WHAT i'M SAYING TO U EITHER.. I hope u have a website that we can hopefully go to and watch the full build of some of these items. It's the whole thing I love to watch.. el " ñangapiry " , pitanga , ( eugenia uniflora ) crece en el noreste de la República Argentina, es un arbusto con una fruta pequeña y en mi ciudad (Buenos Aires ) se planta como ornamental, y lo resiembran los pájaros. . . tengo un pequeño trozo de esa madera, rescatado de una poda.
