I’m glad to see you too have a “rats nest” of wires behind your station. I’ve given up trying to make it look tidy. Love the videos. Keep them coming. Good luck with your flying adventure. I’ve been flying since I was 18 yrs old. I’m 67 now. The most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Cool, I always enjoy seeing peoples shacks. I always get snippets to add or more ideas for my station which is still in the works.

Thanks for the tour Dave. As I am still setting up my shack, I am looking at as many stations as possible to get ideas. I wish manufacturers would put 2 power cables in with their product, then you would be able to shorten down the permanent installation, and have a spare for running portable. The rats nest of wires makes fault finding difficult, it looks so untidy and could cause interference via coupling (I think?) I enjoy your channel, factually accurate (some aren't), and presented with an easy style. Keep up the good work. Jim M7BXT

An older family friend, Murphy, a flier, often said "There are old fliers and bold fliers, but no old, bold fliers." I push things to the limit, and my flier friends call me "an envelope shredder." So, to live longer, I do not fly. N0QFT

Dave, so I'm watching your video, nice shack. But my eyes catch the box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans on top of the Hallicrafters radio!!! Wife and I are 50+yo Potterheads! PS your wsjtx settings for an FTDX3000 helped me lots. Take care and stay safe! 73 Cliff W3KKO

Hey Dave - Thanks for the shack overview - I love to see others "offices" (laboratories, dungeons, grandpas hideout ?) There is one thing you did that I wish I could figure out a way to do, and that is to have room in back of my desks to get to all the tangle! Well done sir - h In order to move things around, add or subtract equipment, etc. is a real chore without direct access to the back of the collection of things. Threading connections from piece to piece can be difficult. I do try to keep some regularity in how things are connected, such as ground wires go straight down to the single point copper bar, RF (coax) I try to keep under that to help separate it from other cables, the audio/data/control etc cables I try to keep up near the table top shelves away from the coax, and so on. Helps a lot in minimizing RFI problems, along with choke magnets on much of it. Computer/ audio in/out to the left, V/U radios and HF to the center, with power and boat anchor stuff to the right on the "L" side table nearer to the antenna switches and amp, very much like how you have done it.

I forgot to mention Dave, I do got into ham radio also when I saved up enough money to buy a Hallicrafters SX-99 receiver. Unfortunately, I no longer have it, when I got married my first year in the Army, I traded it back to Allied Radio for several kits to build such as a tube tester, so that I could repair TV's on the side and earn some extra money for my young and growing family (4). I sure wish I had that SX-99, it was a real nice receiver. Living in the country at the time with lots of woods around, I ran a copper wire about 300 feet from my second floor room to the woods and high up in a tree. Sigh, I sure wish I had the old SX-99 again.

Thank goodness for the rear view with the wiring. Whilst I appreciate that running short cables with the correct orientation to one another might be of benefit, the reality is often different. Personally my shack is modelled on John Wyndhams' Day of the Triffids.

Thank's Dave. I'm kinda glad to see a "rats nest". The reason is wouldn't running a bunch of cables in close parallel to each other increase the chance of noise inducting from one wire into another?

I love the content of your videos and the wealth of information you pass on to all us Ogies. The one thing I would love you to improve on is the stability of your cameras and your figiting of your hands during recording. It is very distracting and plays hell with your auto focus. Thanks for what you do and 73. N7MHR

Good luck with the flight endeavor! I’ve been flying since early 2002 and been flying Army helicopters since 2003. Now they’ve got me temporarily making documentaries for the Army 🤷‍♂️. Give me a ring if you have any aviation questions. ~K0AVN~

Hi Dave, Nice layout. I have to work out of my bedroom, so finding the room for the shack is at a premium. I still have a Flex 6400 and used Acom 1000 in their boxes waiting for me to free up some space. :-( 73 and stay safe. WB3BJU PS That was nice of Callum to offer you a DX Commander.

Very nice, simple layout. I have a question. Are you able to run the amp solely off of the solar and for how long will the batteries last. I have been enjoying these videos you are sharing with us. Thank you Dave.

Thank you Dave, I am relaying out my shack after a move from one end of the house to the other, with some additions, so this presentation was most useful. My problem is, my station table and desk next to it have to be up against a wall, as the room is 10 feet wide by 19 feet long. So the wiring is up against the wall meaning that I had better think ahead and have an easy way to get to the wiring for any additions or changes. It has it's challenges for sure. Do you plan to ad a world clock that shows the gray-line progress? I saw one on QST about a year ago that uses a regular monitor screen with software and some hardware for under $300 I believe.

IMHO there should be room for three chairs. One for me. One for one to teach me, And one for a younger person to learn from us. IMHO this should be part of the Navy Intermediate Level of Maintenance. Not one technician fixing just ASQ-10's.

perfect timing - i'm about to re-jig my entire shack/lab to reduce the QRM, your video really helped, esp showing how you have your DC earth/grounding - having seen your other videos on earthing, do you run a thick braid from that copper strip to a physical earth outside ? many thanks in advance, Alan / M7ALU

I run stranded 2-gauge wire to the ground rod right outside the shack. The braid would work too.
