Sure appreciate your videos! I just purchased a 7300 (other radios are Kenwood hybrids). I wanted something modern that I could use while tinkering on the old stuff. I'm a new ham, well 3 years liscenced anyway.. Your early videos were a great resource for "practical" information for me! Thanks again! Jay, K7WLE

Dave, don't think you are the only one that is messed up a motherboard during the learning process of building computers! I have been I ham since 1978 and my current rig is Yaesu ft 920 that I bought on my 50th birthday. I am 71 now so that rig is 21 years old. You have just about talked me into getting the Icom 7300. After looking around I found that R&L Electronics has the Icom 7300 listed for $878.89. But they also have some package deals that include speaker, microphone and power supply at a great discount. So you can get a real nice deal with your stimulus check! LOL! Loving your daily covid 19 daily videos! Thanks for your hard work.

Works fine with Linux, no drivers are needed. The Icom settings are all the same. The only thing that caught me out was a 'permissions problem'. By default a standard user doesn't have access to the 'dialout' group, without this you don't have permission to 'talk' to the radio. You just need to go into the users and groups settings and add yourself to the 'dialout' group. Also check that you have permission to access to the 'audio' group as well.

I had the same issue trying to set up my TNC for packet. So when I got an icon radio that problem was luckily already solved. Was a great head scratcher to me for a while before someone was kind enough to point it out.

Thanks Dave, got my 7300 and mfj 2010 set up! Made contacts on 6 and 10 meters. Listen to radio Romania on 40 and had great audio from ham in Connecticut on 40. I’m in Daytona beach fl. Very impressed. I’m new at this, previously only on 2 meters with the Yaesu ft-7900 and mfj 1/4 wave you recommended several years ago. Again thanks and 73 KW4FH

Thank you David !! I was tearing my hair out trying to get my 7300 to work with n3fjp. After following your instructions exactly; it worked, and better than it ever has, it now even displays the mode in the test window. Ok ! I also run the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. Since following your setup instructions, the Linux programs, CQrlog and Xlog now recognize the rig ! 73 Dave WA7AXT

After making changes to the radio and the Rig (your settings do work): Turn off the rig. You may notice in the Device Manager the port goes away. Then restart the radio. You will notice that there is the handshake that happens as you indicated. The radio and wsjt should be talking to each other.

Thank you Dave for this excellent demo. Even though it is an ICOM radio, I am sure the settings are VERY similar for other manufacturers such as Kenwood or Yaesu. I hope you and your wife had a Blessed and Safe Easter. I miss seeing the old videos that you did years ago on your dirt bike ( before you broke your arm in a fall ) with camera going up in the trails around your home in Beautiful Colorado. Looking forward to today's presentation, it really is helping all of us who are shut-in, it makes us feel "connected" in a more family/friend way with all our Ham Radio brothers and sisters around the world.

I look forward to this series of videos because the digital modes are what I've not been able to do with my ic7300. Everything else works great, but digital has eluded me. There are so many conflicting instructions out there, all claiming that this radio is a piece of cake to set up.

Thanks Dave the most understandable presentation I have seen! I have a IC-7610 many of the settings are the same. Just reading the manual for these settings is confusing. One point: When using an Icom linear amplifier, the CI-V SUB port must be "unlink from REMOTE" The remote connector on the radio is used to control the amplifier.

Good timing Dave. I literally just placed on order for the IC-7300. When I get back to Bloomfield, NM in a few days I'll get my EFHW up and put it on the air. I kind of wanted an all mode rig but the IC-7300 seemed more user friendly than the almost impossible to find other brand I was looking for so I went for HF/6m instead. I may try some HF packet radio out. We'll see how it goes

This is the best video I have seen on how to set up the ic 7300 with a computer. I found this set up will only work for me UNLINK FROM REMOTE. Setting the Baud rate to auto is a great tip. I was finding myself changing the baud rate between applications. I also found that a double ferrite cable works better ($7.00 amazon). Thanks for the video KN4QLH 73

When you put the USB A end into the computer, *always* plug it into the same port. If you put it into a different USB port, Windows will think it is new hardware, a new com port number will be assigned, and you'll have to reconfigure. Nasty surprise but old news in Windows versions.

You are exactly right! I ran into this issue a few days ago. I got a new desk for my office/ham shack and I realized that the computer got my 9700 and 7300 mixed up so I had to go through all of my audio settings in my various programs and swap them! Even getting both radios initially setup with USB was a frustrating experience.

The Eastern Orthodox churches don't have Easter/Pascha on the Sunday closest to the Full Moon... It's quite a bit more complicated to that. The rules are basically the same, but the full moon is based on some tables and equations instead of looking up in the sky :) Next year our Pascha is 5 weeks(!) after the Western Easter. Hey, David, do you have any ideas on the how-to's on hooking up a Signal Link to an Icom IC-7300?
@stevesus32954 жыл бұрын
This is what is confusing to me. I have my 7300 connected to a Raspberry Pi. I didn’t have to install any drivers. There are two so-to-sat channels that I can see. One is audio and the other is tty serial port data. I am using the serial port data for my antenna controller. I am sending and receiving the raw HEX data and interpreting it in the control program on the Pi. I don’t do anything with the audio. As for Windows 10, I don’t remember what I did. I guess I installed the Icom driver.

Thanks for this excellent video. The IC7300 is very fussy about getting the settings right. Question, I am using FT8 and all is working. However, the radio will not stay in the Data mode. As soon as it transmits it reverts back to USB. Any ideas? Thanks, Dennis

I do not have the 7300 it is going to be soon that i will have one. I'm so far behind on the digital modes. my question is after I get the radio . Will a chrome book computer work on stuff like this. maybe I will see a video on this out here one of these days
@DAVIDGREGORYKERR4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are going to use digital modes, I wonder why you don't go with the AM4 based motherboard and something like the RYZEN 7 4800H APU, if you have a BROTHER HL3150CDW then you can print the manual but select double sided printed and set length or breadth.

David, Thanks for your series. Has been very helpful to me just getting back into amateur radio and my first dip into HF. Have put together what is along the lines of your reference system (IC-7300, MFJ 2012, Rig runner 4004U) Have a different power supply but working well. Am using an A/B cable from an HP printer I replaced a couple of years ago. Went through all the settings on the computer and have downloaded and installed the driver and WSJT-X. Noticing that when I have the USB cable connected to my laptop (Windows 10), and turn on the power supply, I lose all audio on the computer. (Even if radio is off.) If power supply off, can have USB cable inserted in computer and audio works perfectly. Is it supposed to do that? Thanks, Frank KY4FG

Thanks Dave for doing the video and the others during the lockdown! I did what you showed, also have a 7300 and use a desktop machine. After all the setup a rig failure window opens and says: Hamlin error: Communication timed out while opening communication to rig!. Not sure what it means but I can’t use the software in FT8 mode. What do I have to change? Just now another window opened and said this: Rig Control error! Do you want to reconfigure the radio interface? Thanks so much ! Martin, KB0NRT in EN31

Yikes! USB MOD LVL @ 74%! I set mine about 35ish and I'm still tickling the ALC a bit too much. CI-V USB Port, I use UNLINK from [REMOTE] (so the radio can negotiate CI-V Baudrates (auto)) Echoback to on (required). USB SEND/keying> USB Send: RTS (set wsjt-x same) , USB Keying (CW): DTR , USB Keying (RTTY):DTR I so enjoy your casts Dave :) . KE8MUW

Hi Dave, we are also advised to stay in here in Germany. As the last storm damaged my HF vertica I have now time to build and put up a ZS6BKW junior antenna. The horizontal length is 14.2m. I´m not sure if what I found out about the vertical feeding line. I read that it is 12,2m. To me it seems to be far too long. Do you have any information about the dimensions? Otherwise I´d go for a half size g5rv antenna. Thanks!
@sando88184 жыл бұрын
DL6UK, I'm using the ZS6BKW as my only antenna, yes, the vertical ladder line is aprox. 42 feet long, I managed to deploy the antenna a little bit higher than that so there is about 1 foot space between the ground and feed line. It works as advertised, I've made DX contacts in 80, 40,20, 10 and 6 meters. the antenna is very efficient on 40 and 20, all other bands it needs an a tuner. WP4AES 73!!!

I would also offer advice to be careful what you say. You have people that will follow what you say to a tee since this is a "reference" station. Why on earth do they need a color printed out copy of the manual? The cost to do that from my Office Max is $76. Save some trees and read the PDF online for free and in color. That made no sense. Sorry.
