But wasn't he who told Michael to stay away from his "family" and since part of Michael's brain had to be removed that which hold all of his past memories are now gone forever which includes the part that makes who Michael is. William should be glad, so why isn't he?

It's true that most of the blame lies with William. But removing the brain of your child, whom you saw being born and growing up, is not easy to digest because it is true that he lose the bad moments and that is a "good" thing but you also lose the good moments of your childhood and as we have been able to see with that it has taken away part of your feelings so for a father No matter how bad it is, it is not easy to deal with the situation and we can see that William regrets it although it is already too late and what is done is done.
