A good cloak is an awesome investment too for chilly night raids. Super cheap to make too. My cloak (that I actually wear in public sometimes too) was just a $8 poncho I found at good will, and I sewed on a hood
@KristinBrumley10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I actually made my own cloak (which you can see in the opening credits) and it's warmer than my winter coat. Basically, I make all the people jealous in the winter. :3

Ou! Also, neat trick. I've found that an outfit can look 100 times better, 100 times more authentic, and 100 times sexier, if you add a corset. Literally, wear anything thats not a logo'd shirt and jeans, add a corset, it looks Larpy
@KristinBrumley10 жыл бұрын
Haha. I love that trick...good one!

Certain corsets are pretty overdone right now, though :/ I mean, you can barely go to any fantasy event without seeing at least 10 women with the same black corset on. And that is fine by me, they can wear what they want to wear, but I want my characters to actually stand out. (not hating, as I said, people can wear what they want to wear)

Hello. My name is Kinnon and I am 13 years of age. Im new to larp but due to Mo's and your videos gave me alot of ideas, confidence and helpful advice! But regardless Im looking for a simple one at start. Mainly for a foot soldier look. Like a kettle helmet and Gambison
@theexchipmunk8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, developing you costume is especially important for new Larper´s. I remember the first postapocaliptic con i went to. I had a old shirt, few belts, a ripped pair of jeans, a few belt pockets made from leather and old hiking shoes. Petty basic but usable. Now after around a year my character has (all obviously modded to look post apocalyptic): A bullet prove vest, military steel helmet, a belt system made from different belts and carrying systems (that entails field tableware, a water bottle, multiple pockets, magazine pockets, a sidearm), knee protectors, a semi automatic rifle (made from a Nerf gun), a gas mask, old leather combat boots and a multitude of small things collected over a multitude of conventions (pocket watch, shawls and other decorative and practical kniknaks). Most was brought in thrift stores and in shops that carry used military equipment but also many self-made things.

my professional theatre makeup kit was the best 50 bucks i ever paid my high school. I still use it and I will always use that brand
@senzabean9 жыл бұрын
I forgot to put the brand it's Ben Nye. It can be pricey, but sign up for special deals and emails can help as well as local events and theatre teachers. I got the basic tech kit through my tech theatre class in high school for either 30 or 50 bucks i can't remember it was so long ago but the exact kit i have has scar wax, spirit glue and remover, brushes, colored creams, pencils, and even latex.

I just came back from a convention that had a LARP sparring panel, and I have to say, I'm hooked on that little preview I had of it, though, I know literally nothing about this from a costume aspect, but I have a few years of D&D Pathfinder, which is why I took to it so well. I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas on how to go about costuming?

Slade Dingess What sort of character are you considering?
@sladedingess66559 жыл бұрын
Well I always played a dwarf in my tabletop games, but I do know that would be hard to do on a real person.
@KristinBrumley9 жыл бұрын
Not impossible, however. Do you have a LARP game already decided upon?

I do not, I am not even sure there is a group within two hours of where I live, to be honest.

Sometimes it helps to have a system and ruleset in mind, first. For instance, there are some games that may create races of creatures that another does not.

Good evening, I have been trying to find ears that are dark in complexion. All the ones I have managed to find so far have been incredibly pale or fair and clash heavily with my dark complexion. If I can find a pair of just about any shape wars at this point even medium or light brown would be amazing. I have looked up many tutorials to darken the complexion to match my skin and have tested a few methods that used makeup however I have a bad habit of rubbing it off by accident. I intend on doing my first larp if not next year than 2021 and I would prefer to at the very least not have the color difference be so stark if I touch my ears a few times. Thank you and sorry for the long message

Another point about boots and costuming generally. Unlike say a cosplay or fancy dress costume, a LARP costume actually has to work for real. Most of us are going to be out of doors in all sorts of weathers so it has to take a lot more punishment from the elements or from some of the hard physical activity we do. Armor is a good example, if your playing a combat orientated character it helps a lot if what your wearing not only looks good but gives a certain amount of protection as well.
@KristinBrumley10 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Very good point. :)

i have decided on my character style which is a young, fresh faced human who has been thrust into a life of war and the outfit i have my sights on is armour much like the knights templar with the chain mail underlay and a surcoat bearing saint george's cross and obviously a helmet. a few questions about that, firstly do you think it will be ok for me to have an english themed emblem on the surcoat(the english flag), secondly do you recommend real reenactment grade armour and cloth or an alternative and finally how do you suggest i build on the costume over time to save money e.g i'd rather not run around in just a helmet letting it all hang loose and simply punching rabbles of orcs to death with my bare hands (that would be funny though) :)

Okay, so I know that this is an older video but I wanted to see if I could wink an answer out of this. I haven't larped myself yet I've been considered to be apart of my local "larping community" for a while now as people tend to ask me to make them costumes. This dosent come out of nowhere as it's well known that I can sew and thus usually help out the theater group with some simpler costumes. My big thing though is pants. I can't make 'em. Recently a pal of mine has talked me into playing a more active role in larp events and I have gone throughout my free time creating not only a character but also their costume (or would it just be their wardrobe?). Now, everything looks great except...pants. I have no idea how to deal with this. I've tried using a large pair of khakis and then sewing the up but the color (and even the material a bit) stood out too much. I've heard a large pair of baggy pants works fine but as my character is a ranger and will be moving through brush a lot Im hesitate to use anything that might get caught a lot. Any ideas?
@KristinBrumley9 жыл бұрын
Hey, Joshua! Glad to have you as a viewer and welcome to the LARP community! :) As for pants, I honestly like using scrubs. I found a brown pair in a Goodwill a few years back and they're perfect. They are plain, comfortable, and an appropriate amount of baggy. Also they have pockets--which often come in handy.

Depends on your budget, really. Honestly, I've taken a brown pair of scrubs and they've worked very well as a simple pair of pants that look in-period. Rough them up outside a bit, rub dirt into the knees, and you're set for as little as $10-$20.

I need ideas for a rogue character. I have had trouble finding things to put together mostly because I am plus sized. And everyone that makes costumes charge much more for plus clothing and regular sized people. I am willing to wear mens clothing as well as womens. I just rather not wear a skirt. The Colors I perfer are black and brown.
@KristinBrumley10 жыл бұрын
Have you thought about using scrubs pants? They make them in all sizes and they're pretty cheap. You can find a good brown pair, rough them up a bit, and that's a good start. For a rogue you don't want to go all black--people think it's black clothing that helps you hide in the dark. It's actually lots of dark, natural colors and an outfit that breaks up your outline that does the trick.

@grotanski10 жыл бұрын
1. start with a basic outfit, avoid black-spam. trust me if you just wear all black, you just end up looking like a black blob with a sword, mix colours in there and maybe some textures. 2. Think about why your character would wear that item. I have an arabian/persian style rogue who wears different facemasks as one is for relaxing time and the other for missions, and the outfit is tailored towards this idea, 3. this should actually be number one....WEAR SOMETHING COMFORTABLE AND APPROPRIATE FOR THE WEATHER..i have been to larp and wore very little in the middle of winter and it isn't nice when a freezing wind chills you to the bone. 4. have fun :P

oh and just one more tip for weapons, use swords and daggers first, as they will allow you to practice pulling blows better, when you've gotten the hang of it then switch to more unweildly ones...like a 2 handed warhammer or an axe. but good luck and I hope you like your larp system!!!
