Stay Melo: The Immigrant Powerhouse of NYC Soccer

The perennially nationally ranked Martin Luther King High School’s boys soccer team is comprised of immigrant kids from around the world. Coach Martin Jacobson (Coach Jake) believes in “learning life’s lessons and helping others. That’s two reasons why we’re on earth.” In this episode, Carmelo visits with Coach Jake and some of the kids to learn about their life stories, and how sport can save people’s lives.

Obama, our last real president pledged over $100 million in US aid to Haiti. If you want to point fingers start with the American red cross and their mis management of their role in Haiti. I met a Haitian man when I was on holidays in the Dominican Republic right after all that shit went down. Lost his entire family, one of the most heartbreaking stories I've ever heard. I'm so happy for this kid (and the others also) they seem to be doing good. I hope they all achieve great things in the future. I love these Melo vid's, really makes you think twice about the world we live in and how good most of us have it.

This is an uplifting and educational piece. One thing misunderstood, or perhaps will never be known [in the US] is that football is life. US sports fan complain the lack of scoring or even matches that end in draws, well this isn’t just another “sport” that ends when the digital screen gets to zero... Football continues, it plays in our veins, it teaches lessons, it imitates life. You feel football, breath, dream, and live this way of life, embrace its rich and long culture. Those not brought up in this culture, will have a difficult time understanding, and may never. Regardless of the US’s perspective, football is life, a culture which has crept its way out of the fields of US Ivy League misinterpretation and into the psyche of the street kids of the states, and the state that has become the closest to understanding is Atlanta.

He was born in NYC and raised in Baltimore, but still has family in NYC, and also in Puerto Rico. He has foundations that help the poor and underprivileged in Baltimore, NYC, Puerto Rico, Denver, and other towns. He’s helped build Parks, Basketball Courts, Soccer Fields, and provided scholarships and aide in each of those areas. So yes he has given back to his multiple communities. He’s putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to activism and helping improve people’s lives.

English immigrant living in the US here. This is the future of team USA. This culture will dominate the game and put the US men’s game on the map against these big European clubs. I currently live in America, but I’m from England. Somebody asked me point blank, would you rather root for the USA or England in the World Cup. At first I was torn. England is my hone and we have been so close, but football/soccer in America needs to be bigger and it starts like this. That’s why I will root for the USA.
