Hello Marie-Ann, I come from Northern Ontario, which is sometimes colder than Montreal. I have never heard this set of rules, although I practiced them growing up. This is a wonderful set of rules for any cold climate. Basically, wear something to break the wind and then be warm underneath. The only thing I would add is that any coat one wears, especially if a wool coat, be lined and have an extra layer - a chamois between the wool and the lining. It will break any wind on your back, which will keep you warm, but you must have an insulating lining. A heavy down puffer coat or technical puffer coat will also work. I love that the information would help anyone who isn't used to cold weather. What a great set of rules! A hat, scarf and lined gloves or mittens are also necessary!! Thank you!!

I grew up in Montreal, it can get cold in the winter but it is also very damp. Layering really helps. I live in northern Alberta now and it is much colder here but drier. I have learned to deal with the long cold winter here. Thanks for making it a tad more stylish.

Another Canadian here. Toronto, where I live, doesn't get as cold or snowy as Montreal but our winters are cold and snowy as well. For me, wool coats are only for when I'm going immediately from my car into the building. If I have to walk outside on city streets, waterproof stylish boots and a puffer coat or jacket is tres chic.

Like other Canadians I appreciate that you tackled extreme cold dressing. Like others, I only wear my wool coats for going from car to building or if there is no snow in the forecast. Waterproof puffer coats with hoods are my choice otherwise. Everyone is a bit bulky in the winter here…lol! But dry! I won’t do wool trousers as if they get wet, they’re not comfortable. Cashmere sweaters, however, have a starring role in my wardrobe. Winter can be messy.

The worst thing about the cold season is the wind. That's why all my jackets have hoods. In extreme cold, I prefer to wear synthetic-padded pants over my jeans, which I take off indoors. And that's only if something happens to the car. And if everything is OK, it's warm in the car! Greetings from Finland!

Bonjour Marie-Anne, Great ideas for staying warm in our Canadian winters. I grew up in the north and now live in a very temperate climate much like Normandy. Your ideas for colder weather are spot on. I wear silk underlayers, and layer on the sweaters. If I'm going shopping, or out to friends or a restaurant, I'll wear my wool coats, but if I'm out for a longer time, my down-filled coat keeps me cozy. Thanks for making winter dressing stylish!

Thank you! I live in the US South and miss cold Falls and Winters so much. I need to go back to the mountains. I lived in Western Montana for a couple years and also learned to dress in thin layers. Then, I wore insulated boots and a long down coat. Very warm.

So very nice. Also, if a person is coming from a warm place to the cold, they will not be acclimated so the fleece-lined long drawers are a good idea. But for those of us who live in the cold regions - and therefore have slowly become accustomed to the colder weather as fall goes into winter - often we will wear long underwear made of silk or a lightweight but insulating fabric made for snow skiing or sledding. Ultimately, as you say, it is about layers = warmth & staying dry. :)

I grew up in the Midwest United States. They had coat checks there to keep your coat for you while attending the theater. I kinda miss that and the winter wonderland snowfalls. Fast forward to now. A few years ago the cold dropped to 1 degree farenheight and the electricity went out in Houston Texas. I finally bought layers again. Cotton can get me by but sweating in them can get heavy. I used exercise clothing to use as base layers under blue jeans. And a tank top under shirts. We don't need them much here, not more than a week a year, if that. Lined jean jackets can be enough most of the time. Thank you for the review.

Marieanne , you are amazing. I follow a few fashion influencers, but I must admit that nobody else is quite as interesting and engaging as you. I love the fact that you try on all the outfits you describe, so we get a great idea of what they look like on a real moving person. You are beautiful, funny and very relatable. As far as I’m concerned , you are Number 1! Keep up the good work. Love from Mara from New York. ❤

I myself am from Toronto. My mother is from Timmons. My mother always said when buying a winter jacket 1) make sure your coat covers your bottom (no wind blowing up) 2) always have a hood 3) alway make sure your front zipper has a flap to cover it

Bonjour Marie-Ann, you certainly addressed Canadian weather and how to dress for them very well. I wouldn’t suggest suede boots because the slush and salt ruins the material and leave white stain on them. My challenge is that I’m a big petite woman and can’t find good winter coat to be extra larger for the layering underneath. Sweater sleeves are too long for my short length of my arms. In your opinion, how well do the Montreal women dress? Whenever I visit Quebec, I always feel more inspired with fashion. I wish you came to Toronto, I would give you lots of hugs!

Thank you for the tips Marie-Anne! Great topic! I love your suggestion of layering. As a Montrealer, I can say that last winter was warmer than usual, so the coats you are showing would have been perfect for January and February. But for -15c and below, I am afraid the wool coats are not enough. We have to wear another coat with down. I know, these are less elegant 🤷‍♀️ So we keep the nice coats for special occasions where we don’t have to walk and the down coats for everyday. 😊

Layering is definitely the way to keep warm in the winter. However, I live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, and we have the most temperate climate of the entire country. (Not ALL of Canada is perpetually covered in snow and ice! My climate is similar to Seattle’s.) What we do have is lots of rain (the “wet coast”) so water-resistant or waterproof outerwear is a must. And for layering sweaters, I prefer a cardigan that I can slip on and off easily.

Thanks Marie-Anne, such fun! As a former Montrealer, kindly allow me to say that we don't really dress like that in the depth of winter. All of those layers indoors would have you sweating profusely. Dressing for outdoor activities is one thing, but for city living we may wear one or two winter-weight items, topped by a much warmer outer layer. A wool coat would only work for spring and fall. Most people wear down-filled puffer coats or faux or real fur (controversial but the warmest). Unlike many places in Europe, our interiors are well-insulated and comfortably warm, so you would die with all of those layers, and then promptly freeze outdoors due to the perspiration. Merino wool as a base layer wicks moisture away from the body, silk and cashmere really are not as effective. Moisture is your biggest enemy in the cold.

“This sexy beast of clothing,”. I almost fell off my couch laughing just looking at that thing. Of course, I live in the hills between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz in California. It is easily 20 degrees cooler in my house than outside in the city (either Los Gatos or Santa Cruz). I wear undergarments like that every day during Winter. And yes, they are just as sexy as yours. Haha…. Sorry I just loved it. That is all. ❤
