Dude hourly employees don’t get sent home if you work at a legitimate shop. I don’t know why he always says this. It’s crazy how we are the only field where the pay structure is this dumb. Flat rate should be abolished without a guarantee. You should always get paid for your time

@@dboardman17 exactly that’s why people don’t wanna get into this field. Nobody wants to invest into a trade where you might not make money. Change the pay structure or you will continue to see a shortage of workers. That’s why dealerships are always short staffed

After the lockdowns, it is crazy to be flat rate and not have a guaranteed amount you get paid. It is fine to be flat rate, but be sure you have an agreement to be paid at least 35 hours no matter what.

I understand the frustration and have considered going hourly too but at the same time I average 5 more dollars per hour based on my hours turned even with our shop being dead. I just can’t see going hourly for that reason

A conversation I witnessed when I was an apprentice during a slow period. Technician: (In a menacing tone) Is it worth it for me to punch in today or should I turn around and go home! Service manager: (In a nervous tone) No work today buddy. You can go home. Technician: (In a menacing tone) That's what i thought!

More reasons to gtfo and find a better job that's more stable and tell kids what a bad career choice automotive technician is. I sure wish all fifty states agreed to have employment laws in place to require a forty hour minimum flat rate pay guarantee for the exact same reasons why we all agreed to make it illegal to employ little children to work in coal mines for poverty wages. States can do that and millionaires crying robbery will still be filthy rich. Nope. USA has the most billionaires 2024 while we still struggle for scraps using a flat rate system from 1924?

I don't waste my time trying to upsell or write up bullshit. Front desk won't even try. Do what the ticket says, document safety faults, punt it out the door. Ideally go home when there's no more work. There aren't any "home runs". Oil changes are bullshit time wasters, have the hourly people do it or just slam it out and ship it. No, they aren't buying the leaking water pump.

Slow times!!! I wish!! I havent had a second to take a breath in years. My last job was scheduled 3 weeks out and no end in sight. Last year i switched shops and still hit the ground running, havent been able to keep up and customers keep dropong off "work ins". Hay any of you guys want work just come to south central Michigan, you wont run out of work and you wont have trouble getting hired.

We have several factors contributing to these slower times. The economy isn’t doing all that great regardless of what the government tells us. We just had tax day 2 weeks ago. This is a presidential election year which typically tends to be a slower year than others.

Yup, I was let go as hourly. Here in CA shop has to pay both type of tech unemployment and hours / wages so tech is paid at least min wage.

I’ve sat and watched whole movies during the slow season before a car came in. I was hourly plus flat rate as a lube tech at the time. And we had a specific crew that was for cleaning the shop at the dealer.

This is our first slow down from north carolina started week before valentines and has since got dead after good flow since December 2015. This is back to the way it use to be with bad running government and election year. I am closing shop and taking much needed vacation time and using phone to make appointments while on vacation to utilize the time to a fullest days and empty the others for time for family

It's been extremely busy lately. Booked 2 weeks ahead and have been like that all April and doesn't look like it's showing any signs of slowing. Not sure where all these slow times are happening. We're a small family independent shop.
