Taking inspiration like this from an existing product that solves some of the problems you're facing is pretty smart, in my opinion. And that does seem like pretty solid design! Further tailoring it to your specific use-case seems closer to an homage than stealing, simply because it's recognition of good design that you're iterating on.

Couldn't agree more! This is the tricky thing to balance. I've been thinking of it as "leave it better than you found it" I think that embodies the idea of an homage as well.
