GRAMMY Award-winning trumpet, composer and educator Charlie Porter demonstrates a simple way to understand and utilize the sound of Oliver Nelson's famed composition "Stolen Moments" by using a pedal point and Major 7th chords a minor 3rd and perfect 4th above (D pedal w/FMAJ7 & GMAJ7, though not the same key as the song, which is a step lower).

The D is the root note played by the left hand. Rather than looking at this as Fmaj7 and Gmaj7 over D, I see it as playing a Dm 9 chord (the E of the Fmaj7 is the 9 of the D) and a D 13 (the B from the Gmaj7 is the 13 of the D). That's how I would chart the chords.

Hey Charlie! Did you choose to play it in a different key to make the piano voicings a little simpler for horn players? Just happened to notice you played it in D minor instead of the usual key of C minor from the original recording. Great job explaining the concept, I’ve always loved this album for both Freddie’s incredible solos and also for the brilliant composing and arranging by Oliver Nelson. Merry Christmas my man!
