I'd really recommend setting up an inventory system. Speaking as a software engineer it's a *massive* job, at the start, but once you've got a good system (and there are number of off the shelf system that are very good) and if you keep up with it, it becomes *very* useful and easy to maintain. Sometimes it's worth doing a 200-300 hour job that will save you 5 hours a week if you're in it for the long haul.

"Magic players do not know colors." Oh my God, I could never do that. My physical cards were always sorted by color. It makes them super-easy to locate.

Just now discovering this great series of informative videos! Thanks for the helpful insight. I am a shop owner and I don't keep an inventory either. Every time I file my (IRS) taxes, they ask what my inventory was at the start of the year and I freak out. What's the best way to file taxes as a shop owner if you don't keep an inventory? THANKS!

I think the first time you catch a thief, you just ban them from the store for either a set amount of time or forever. There are citizen's arrest things that stores can send out to put a person in a state of trespass from the store, and if they violate that, then you can get the police involved.

yesterday i went to my local card store to look at the BFZ set and they still dont have it. last week they said that its going to arrive this week and now they said that its going to come new week. i thought that they are opening packs and sorting the cards like you do, so i asked if i could maybe help them sort the cards and count them, since i had several hours to kill. but this card store is actually part of a chain card store with several of there stores in different cities, so they get a certain amount of card and a set list "mailed" to them. they do not restock on singles and they dont buy collections... also their set list is very limited, with no mythic rares and only a few rare ...

I alphabetize rares and if someone asks for a specific card, I just look in the place it should be. I couldn't imagine doing inventory on cards. I can also relate to people messing cards up. I have to re-alphabetize all the time. Fortunately, I found that telling my customers the cards are sorted alphabetically has reduced this problem greatly. I just say, "If there are any particular cards you are looking for just let me know. The cards are sorted alphabetically and by rarity." So far, only my Pokemon cards are sorted by vintage and modern though. I do have one question. What method do you use to move commons? So far, I have had some bit of luck. I sold a box of 1200 YuGiOh common cards for $15 this month. Last month, I had someone buy about 10,000 Pokemon commons/uncommons for $450. This was the first time in 2 years I ever had a shortage of commons. It seems moving Pokemon commons in general is not a problem either. Magic: The Gathering commons, however, seem to be harder to move. I have only been dealing in Magic: The Gathering for about 7 months (I started after the other MTG dealer moved to New York), so I haven't accumulated too much yet. I might need to know some things for the future though.
