I’ve historically always avoided Embiid, but if I’m picking 8/9, I’ll probably take him. Other guys in that range DO NOT excite me. Took Tatum 9th last year, majorly underwhelming. Coming off the Finals & Olympics, probably can’t even lock him in as a readily available guy either

While you may be right that Embiid only needs ~60 games to meet his draft expectations, the best ability is still availability. If those games are missed in your fantasy playoffs, that really damages your chances. That's the argument against a guy who you expect to miss at least 15 games. That's really the same reason why Kawhi, a top 6 guy per game is projected in the 3rd/4th rounds. IMO the risk isn't worth a first rounder where you have much healthier options. Also adding George complicates the mix a bit, where Embiid won't be asked to score 33 a night.

hey dan i dont understand the luka at 3 as an obvious pick. first, the injury risk is quite material. he was getting steroid injections in the playoffs.. secondly, the dallas mavs schedule is not good in your week of playoffs.. just 2 games. luka also kills your ft% and hes a guard so thats not ideal.. i just dont get why hes an obvious 3. if i had the 3rd pick i rather drafted SGA.

Thoughts on using -1 rankings? Overall rankings isn't useful because including worst category isn't an accurate representation of a players contribution.
@OldManSquad
@OldManSquad 18 күн бұрын
-1 is fine, but I think you need to use both for an accurate assessment. Some guys LOSE value when you take away their weakest category, but those guys are still good in all formats. Plus many folks aren't punting on draft night and choose to punt a category later.

how the hell are we supposed to know who is going to be healthy? It's pure guess work. Guys like Lebron, AD, Embiid, Donovan Mitchell, Irving, Durant, Harden, LaMelo, Bane etc. All of them have a long history of letting down fantasy teams with unavailability. Durant , for example, has had 1 healthy season in 5 years! 4 of those years would've ruined owner's season. Why are we getting sucked into recency bias?
@OldManSquad
@OldManSquad 18 күн бұрын
I mean, you could argue the opposite side. Like... KAT played every game until he basically hasn't played a full season in 3 years. Is Sabonis next? Mikal? KD's injuries have almost all been fluky. Bron is definitely going to rest - he's a different situation. AD missed a ton of games off the bubble championship run where his body never recovered. There are reasons for most of the logic. So then it comes down to math. Is the dude going at a large enough discount to make up for the chance they play 55 instead of 65?
@ReyDonovan-kv4jd
@ReyDonovan-kv4jd 18 күн бұрын
Dan is a roto guy so missed games aren't as detrimental as head to head.
@OldManSquad
@OldManSquad 18 күн бұрын
@@ReyDonovan-kv4jd I'm grading these guys on 'totals' which does indeed include missed games. And we have to look past how much it feels annoying and more to the actual math. And for a lot of these injury prone guys, they're being discounted TOO much. That is to say, they're being discounted like they're going to play 55 games, so if they play 5-10 more than that, they crush ADP

@@OldManSquad Depends how you look at it, in H2H availability week 18-20 etc is what matters. In year 17 of a fantasy dynasty auction league seen a lot of first round guys who are hurt ruin fantasy seasons. Gamble is usually worth it imo deeper in the draft, any OG will remember Marcus Camby as one of the best risk/reward guys who was injury prone.
@OldManSquad
@OldManSquad 18 күн бұрын

@@OldManSquad for sure no guarantees, but Joel’s last 5 years in games is 51,51,68,66,39. A durable player can get hurt of course, even Jokic could get hurt, we saw that happen with Dame. But guys who are consistently hurt, typically stay that way. Joel has an entire career where 68 is his career high and has played 60+ games 4/10 Nba seasons (including the seasons he missed the entire year)
