Thanks for sharing your van build. A very well planned rig. Just for my personal setup, I'd go for a lot less cupboards. That's for me. Cupboards tend to get filled with a lot of unnecessary stuff. And unnecessary stuff is weight. If I dont use something daily, it's removed from my vehicle. I only camp over weekends. But I have to admit, your van is stunning, well done.

Van lifers or even day trippers are scares as hens' teeth in South Africa. Or due to self-preservation, they have become Super Stealth Campers. :-) This setup must have taken some time to work out as it seems more intricate than a Chinese puzzle, but delivering all the creature comforts in the end. I learned a lot. Two thumbs up from Durbs. Dankie :-)

Yup agree about the hens teeth... actually haven't got to meet one yet... in our Europe van we meet them every day. Must say enjoy S.A. just as much, even though there aren't many friends on the road. If you are one, please let us know..

@@JPandRita Maybe in a next lifetime I will be able to hit the road :-) in the meantime there are sooooo much to learn from van lifers due to the design desitions and problem-solving they have had to do. Van lifers truly have to think out of the box. I suck the marrow out of all their experiences. I have been blessed with a roof over my head that needs work and teenage children that need to stay in one place for the time being. So many ideas have stood me in good stead. Water security is a major thing, followed by food security and electricity. Every one thinks Durban is water-rich, but let a supply pipe supply burst and see how long a household lasts. So far I have also only found one person in SA that built a small house on a trailer. Only one in this vast country with a housing shortage? We have much to learn and do.

Hi there... Once your van is paid and done.. Costs are just for food, water and gas... Most power comes from solar panels. Laundry can be challenge. But in SA you have to keep moving or find a safe parking place in a friend's yard... Or pay fro a caravan park which is nearly like paying rent 😢🙄

Hi there, hope you are well. Thinking to do something similar for a trip to Capetown . I have a few questions. Where do you park your car, besides camp sites? Which are the safest place to park your car? Have you tried payed parking spaces, if yes how was your experience. Thank you.
@JPandRita
@JPandRita 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The main safety factor we rely on....., no one knows we are sleeping in the van. Main issue never open your van for anyone to see, where you are going to sleep,. This means we go look for our sleep spot about 15mins before going to sleep. We have made peace with the fact we cannot see a veiw while sleeping😜. If we want to see a sun rise we can drive out to the view point 5 mins before. I have security measures, which I am sure you understand are not shared, suffice to say, basically impossible to get into the van, uninvited... While we are inside, just incase of accidental theft attempt of the van.. 🙄😉. This means during the day we spend our time at the beach or any senic spot we wish. When we are ready to sleep we drive to any parking area, in front of apartments, hotel, 24hr McDonald's etc.. We have become so good at it that even security guards or car guards are surprised in the morning when we get out. Once you do it a few times you turn it into an art... Owners and managers of petrol stations are also often very obliging if you approach them. We have also had residents of Houses farms and plots invite us to their places. Hope that helps

@orcaflotta7867
@orcaflotta7867 6 жыл бұрын
"what kind of license do you need for that vehicle?" This is Saffa, 60% of vehiclists here don't have a drivers license at all. Also I guess you won't need any special license as this a regular van, no commercially used vehicle or such.
@JPandRita
@JPandRita 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there... no, no towing, we feel it would compromise the sealthiness ... have not really found a need for it. My awnings take 10 mins to foldup if we want to go somewhere while camping... when we are in a camp site, like in the Kruger we have a gazebo just to reserve our spot. In Europe we take bicycles with us inside the van so we can tour the great cities.
