Now we've got all the new toys installed on my Grandpa's 1965 Ford F-100 the engine bay is looking much cleaner. We've got an Edelbrock RPM Performer, Holley Sniper 4150 Stealth, Holley EFI Dual Sync Distributor, and all the other goodies to make the perfect driver. Today we're getting it all wired up and making the wiring disappear, it should be ready to start tomorrow!

From Leo: Looks like a fun project, I really appreciate the wiring being set up to look stock. I was a factory trained Carb and ignition tech in the 1970's. As far as operation, a properly set up auto choke carb can be very operate fine, including from a dead cold start. We could do it back then. Efficiency is where the electronics really shine. A set of carb jets only has one size at a time. Jets with needles like in a Constant Velocity side draft carb can do better, within limits. The electronics systems effectively act like an infinite set of jet sizes instantly. That gives you top performance under full load AND fuel economy under light load. On the other hand, an electrical or a microprocessor failure leaves you dead on the road. Even a horrible carb malfunction will let you limp home.

I used to work in a transmission shop as a rebuilder in the 70's. From what you described as an L shaped pan, that should be a C6. Also, on the C6, the bell housing and cast where all one piece. The C4, C5 and the old cast iron FMX had a bolt on bell housing to case. The C6 wasn't too much harder of a rebuild then the C4. I seem to remember the C6 valve body was easier to go through. You need to be careful about the modulator. Some where threaded and some push-in with an o-ring and retaining clip. The push-in type where color coded (blue, green, red and some others) with different shift points. The screw in type had a small screw you could access when the vacuum hose was pulled off. That adjustment put more or less pressure on the diaphragm spring to raise or lower the shift points. Rebuild: go for it.

Only people that don’t work on their own vehicles and/or have never operated a veh with a carb (especially really cold winters) would ever ask why you don’t want to leave a carb on a 55 y/o truck that you want to drive multiple days a week. EFI is the way to go for sure.

Do agree. I've seen well tuned carbs do great even in bad climates but save for a edelbrock I've yet to see any come close to EFI standards for similar amount of bullshit dealt with.

I'm not familiar with a 65 390" v8 carburetor. But the 79 350" v8 in my late dad's E250 work van wasn't terrible here in Wisconsin. Starting was the same on used 79 Lincoln Continental with a 402" v8 as well. Press the gas pedal to the floor once to engage the choke. Then jiggle the gas pedal while starting to get it going. But you have to wait at least 1-3 minutes before trying to drive even on a warm day when cold. With EFI, start and drive. It's what I always did with the 90 E-150 club wagon with a 302 v8 we owned until 2010.

@@davidpick1076 If you have to wait several minutes before driving on a warm day, there's something seriously wrong. If everything's OK, you just start it, wait a few seconds so it has good oil pressure and drive it. That's it. That's what I do in my car, which has a carburetor.

Lotta people just don't know how to tune a carb. Doesn't take a lot more effort than punching data into a screen. I love EFI, don't get me wrong, but in my experience the ones that hate carburetors are the ones that don't know how they work.

@@highlonesomerob5053 JR has explained he does know how to tune carburetors. He just didn't want to deal with this one anymore. And he's explained on Instagram this EFI upgrade was 6 months in the making and it's not just for him. He wanted to make it easy for anyone in his family to drive it. And the video updates have shown this upgrade is a stealth upgrade for people have to really look to notice it.

Great series. I would love to see a series on all the thought and planning that goes into one of these projects. Your vids now show the parts, work snippets and milestones and end results which are really enjoyable... but the work leading up to it, the thinking, changes of plans midstream, etc would add so much more depth to these... i wouldnt think its needed for every project but as a template or something... how do you approach a project, what options available, why decided on the choice, etc....

Carburetor's are the devil. This is the best upgrade you can make to a vintage car / truck and you're doing it right in my opinion. You can't see the upgrades but you enjoy all the benefits of fuel injection. If anything, this will increase the value of the truck significantly. Also, it's YOUR truck so .. who cares? It's not like you're selling it ever. Good on you JR keep it coming!

25 years ago I rebuilt my 289 in a 67 Mustang. I went to a Carter AFB 625cfm carb and MSD billet distributor. It ran fantastic and went from 16mpg to 26! Not sure about the 390 but the 289 likes 45° total timing with the lightest flyweight springs offered (so quickest possible advance). I followed Roush recommendations for that tune and the engine loves it. With that setup my 289 pulls hard through 8000rpm, but there were many other "tricks" involved to get it that way. Hope this setup of yours works how you want it to, no reason it shouldn't!

Ok JR on the old sun tack run new wires from the mercury battery terminals and out Theroux a drilled hole in the side of the case. Use a single A battery from a stun gun to power it. ( yes it's rechargable ) and order on Amazon a cheap single A holder or flashlight to use as a holder. This should last much longer than the lithium AA

The light ford blue was used more on the cars. The trucks came with the dark ford blue. 352, 360, 390, 428 FE engines look identical on the outside. The only way to know which you have is to look at the crankshaft. I see so many people calling these engines a 390 when those truck had 352 and 360’s almost exclusively. Those engines almost always have 352 cast into the block just below the head on the drivers side of the engine. They used the exact same block in the 352, 360, and 390. The crank and rods were the only difference those engines.

exhaust manifold gaskets: Ford did not use gaskets on the FEs, at least the ones with the usual log manifold. With trued mating surfaces on both the head side and the manifold side, they don't leak. From one of the Ford FE forum pages: ....gaskets insulate two like metals (heads and exhaust manifold) that should carry the same heat range through the exhaust system. The gasket will cause the exhaust manifold to run 'cooler' than the heads, thus disrupting the sealed exhaust port because they expand/contract at different rates. To do them right you need to remove the heads and manifold and have the mating surfaces faced/trued and forget about adding gaskets,

If I can add anything its that dont bash a carb just because you dont know how to properly tune it. Injectors fail, modules fail, electronics fry, etc. Not saying tech isnt bad but just because you dont understand it and something you've obviously never been around doesnt give you right to bash it. Ive considered the same setup myself but my 850cfm carb and MSD ignition system serve me well. One day I may consider doing this to my Torino but I like the appeal of a carb and actually feeling the car running and making quick adjustments with a simple spade screw driver.

If you keep the old Tach driver, you could always just run wires from those battery terminals, drill a hole in the original case to run wires through, and mount yourself a weatherproof battery holder somewhere more accessible for quick replacement. Hey JR. Great video. For power to that Sun Tach box. If you know the voltage it needs. Let’s say 3 volts. You could use a buck converter wired to the trucks 12 volt battery then step the 12 volts down to 3 volts or whatever is required then solder some wires to where the battery terminals go to the board then you don’t have to worry about swapping out batteries.

On the Tach Driver box, you either need 1.5v (more like 1.8v from Mercury Battery), or 3v if they are stacked cells in a common case. Best bet is to get a DC-DC conversion chip and insert it in the old driver box. Feed it 12v and dial in what you need. No battery needed in the future and you keep Grand-pa's Tach :)

The mercury cell put out 1.35 Volts, a new AA will have a nominal 1.5 or a tad more, so you may get erroneous readings. They were long lasting at a constant output. You might be able to adjust around this voltage difference or otherwise wire something into the circuit to drop that voltage. I'd use a AA and test the readings against an external tach--the variation might be small enough to ignore. Alternatively, have someone make a small power supply to take the truck's 12V and drop it to 1.35.

I Did the same thing to my 65 F-100. The problem I had is the tank needs a breather with the amount of fuel circulation starts creating a vacuum. I hat to take the rubber gasket off the gas cap and eventually drilled a hole in the cab and installed a vent tube. Which made the gas smell in the cab worse. Best to put a gas tank under the bed at the back of the truck and plumb all 3/8” line. The line coming from the factory tank caused a restriction and burnt up 2 fuel pumps

Having owned an FE block, be sure to check your timing chain and gear. If they are getting worn, you are going to have ignition issues causing a lot of intake backfire due to the “bouncing” of your cam timing. The distributor runs off the timing gear as well, adding to the issue. :-)

A not so quick and dirty method to clean the in cab fuel tank involves removing it from the cab, put it on a metal table, then drop about 3 feet of chain in it. Shake/slide the tank back and forth letting the chain knock all the crap in the tank loose. Rinse with some gas, dump out the junk and remove the chain. You now have a tank free of loose debris.

Plus it's your truck so you do what you want JR, though I was looking at those drum brakes on it thinking they need to go, esp at the front....... 😄

You need to make and sell that keychain! I know I want one. And a tee with that brass design would most likely sell also.

Nice shirt. On April 1st you should have put out a video and intro'd it with "Today on Watch JR Go, we dive back into the R8." And then just start working on the truck again. Well, I guess you can do that next year.

Nice work so far. My only question, is why don't you already have all the fluids drained before you start? I usually get everything staged the night before, so I could get right to the fun stuff. Keep up the great work!

Have you determined what the engine is from? If it were an original 65 truck engine, part numbers on the engine components would start with C5TE- "C5" being 1965. I'm guessing from the valve covers and air cleaner it is C8 or C9. I just ask this if you want to know specs on the heads or cam etc. which might help in tuning the EFI.

What would you recommend as an alternative to the Braun hood light other than the Milwaukee? I own mostly Craftsman and they don't offer one.

I bet Snap-On makes one... and I really don't recommend that. The Milwaukee is the move, but I tried to go buy it and Home Depot didn't have it 😢
