If you're up for some testing (I've also posted the comment above) and of course, if you are curious and it suits you, you could try this: I know that currently you can definitely have "any" Linux distro + Windows, but not "the Steam OS" Linux + Windows. I've also heard that if you HAVE Steam OS installed on your device AND you THEN try to install Windows, it doesn't like that and will not boot properly, However, a reviewer made the point that it's the installation of Windows that kind of messes it up, so you could have Windows installed FIRST and THEN install Steam OS from the provided image. Is this even possible? I'm not familiar with what boot options and install options you do get with the Steam OS image. If you ever install windows on your internal drive, give it a try. Go into the Partition Manager and shrink your internal storage (Windows Partition) so that some Unallocated Space remains after it. Then try the Steam OS USB image and see where it takes you. In theory, it should leave Windows alone, but in practice, I don't know, will it still boot?

Instead of notepad, you can create a batch script that closes the cmd window itself (after sleep maybe), so it will initialize controller and you don't have to interact with anything. But anyway, great job!

the same struggles Steam Controller users have gone through. I kind of remember with GloSC, you can just launch it without Executables like notepad or whatever. It'll still create that borderless window, hence enabling Steam Overlay system wide, which what is needed for Controller to be detected.

I know these thing from the steam controller. What i did or option i had was 1. Just disable the desktop configuration in steam and use the touchscreen for navigation because gamepad mode is always enabled if steam is open. 2. you could link a specific .exe data for Steam. And when you opend that programm you was thrown to desktop and gamepad was enabled. And through that .exe you could change the gamepad configuration, sensentivity etc.

I seem to be having trouble finding the Glosc installer, all I can find anywhere is the gloss (which has no installer). I figured that modern games that automatically recognize my controller when plugged into a PC would also automatically recognize the Steam Deck controller when it's running Windows. Guess not.

Im pretty sure that UWPHook does not enable controller support, it just launches the game. This has been an issue for years in the Steam Link community. GloSC is the solution, but most people add each Gamepass game to steam as non steam games instead of this notepad thing.

There's a paid program called ReWASD that has support for the stream controller. I'm sure after a few weeks they'll have support for the Deck controls. That way you can use the controller without steam. Worth the $20 for the app in my opinion and wished it was on Linux too. I mainly use it for my controller/mouse hybrid controls for Valorant and used to be Apex.

Will that app help get the controller working on the steam deck for warzone? I did the notepad way and i get into the game no problem and the menu. But the controls and the mapping is completely off. L2/R2 zoom in/out to shoot and XAYB aren't working for some reason. It it worked earlier. I added notepad to the library and pressed play and heard the sound. I have battletnet open for warzone. I go to battlenet after playing notepad. Game opens perfectly. The mapping just doesn't work and buttons aren't working anymore. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.thanks.

Why would there be? That stuff is built into SteamOS and is linked to the Gamescope compositor which use the Wayland display protocol. All of these things are SteamOS 3.0/Linux specific. You can probably cobble together something that will do a similarish job using third party software running on the desktop and alt tabbing etc but it won't be an integrated experience.

It seemed pretty much similar to Steam OS, minus you cannot limit/change TDP or FPS on the fly. But I was playing intensive games like Call of Duty and it seemed to draw roughly around the same (anywhere from 9w to 15w+). Hope this helps. That translates to like 2-4,5hrs of battery life depending on the usage (Steam Deck has 42w battery). On idle it's around 5w.

So games that don't run on Linux and xbox gamepass and alot of online games will not work without windows. That's why I recommend duel booting. Ur not forced to use windows but the option Is there. Dual boot is coming soon in an update.

I don´t get it. Why doesn´t the trackpad always act like a mouse and the controller part as a standard controller? It is just a huge pain honestly. Btw glosi doesn´t work at all and glosc is no longer avaiable. It connects a virtual 360 controller but it doesn´t respond. I think it is because steam somehow still detects it partially as desktop mode as it also wouldn´t allow me to load my custom layout for games.

You can just set the desktop config to use a gamepad + useful stuff for the Desktop on the pads if you just want a xbox controller.

This was a great tutorial, and it helped me tremendously, i am just getting used to my deck. Is there a way to go out of a game mid steam, say for example you wanted to just switch a window, kind of similar to alt-tab in windows, can you map a key to do that?

Uuufff it really sucks that you need to use GloSC, I've always found it really unreliable. That is why I've mostly moved away from SteamInput to Rewasd, but I doubt that will be implemented for the SteamDeck.

You can do that with normal steam input for all gamepads with mouse like inputs. They convert mouse input into joystick input on the fly, but it is difficult to tune and has the same max speed as the Joytick. That's why you need to rise the joystick sensitivity ingame.

If I click add to steam I just get Couldn’t detect steam shortcut file, make sure you have at least one non steam shortcut for the file to be present. Steam must be running for it to be detected. I have added notepad on steam and added it like you did on glosc. Don’t know what you did different pls help

But when playing a game all my controller inputs are all out of wack - how did you get glosc to map the steamdeck buttons to xbox inputs? Any help would be greatly appreciated. some games does not support xinput, they only work under a playstation controller. there are many apps that convert xinput in to playstation input (reWASD, inputmapper) but none of them are working, because windows dont detect the controller. if i start this programs with glosc they work for this program, but when i launch the game its xinput again. any ideas how to get this working?

They just updated the Xbox app to let you choose install locations. Can you choose an accessible install location (i.e. NOT WindowsApps) add the .exe to Steam and see if that triggers the controller input? Just curious!

Nope, steam can't hook into the .exe (at least from my testing this week). It is able to launch and monitor it though so if you are using GloSC you can have it close the GloSC window when the game closes now though which is an improvement!

Missing the point. The reason why valve is pushing the steam deck is because they don't like the threat of the windows store. Stream OS is not only free as in free beer but also as in freedom of speech. With steam OS valve is trying to push for a platform where anyone can make games for it,without Nintendo Sony or Microsoft pushing their agenda

The extra price might be cut down due to the screen size and changes made to OEM rules as a result. The biggest reason why Valve decided to make their own OS that's Linux based, rather than use an existing OS like windows, (despite the ecosystem argument which is valid) is also because they have full control in implementing functionality with their own OS that they can control at the kernel and system software/api level. Windows being a distinct OS already that is closed source means they wouldn't be able to make changes or do things at that level unless they go to Microsoft to do those things, which when making a product that attempts to be similar to a console OOTB is unoptimal. Going with Linux as the base instead of FreeBSD (which others like Sony have done for their products) for their OS, is needed because Linux has an existing functioning desktop ecosystem that surrounds it, which allows them to have that ability in creating a custom OS, while also offering existing desktop software and stuff that is already supported. The best of both worlds essentially. This allows them to make the custom features and functionality of the OS at the level that I mentioned, while also providing the PC experience on top of that. Examples of this control can be seen with the fact that through Proton, valve can make changes to a windows runtime version that isn't influenced by Microsoft, but by themselves and the community (if the patches are accepted). They can modify the kernel for the sleep functionality, modify the compositor to force apps to always be in Fullscreen even if they weren't designed for it, and force the Steam Overlay to be integrated in every app running, unmodified by the apps own resolution or display options. The control over the system software implementations allows them to integrate OS related interfaces for Bluetooth and Audio control directly into the Steam UI, to the point where even if you install the OS on other hardware with differing drivers, that stuff still completely works. And they can integrate OS updates and such through the same UI with those mechanisms. There's more but ya get the gist
