Why not sue Ubisoft for manipulative agreement terms that you can only read AFTER you've bought the product which cites them as allowed to take away your use of their product. Valve does not have a monopoly by force, they are a rare case of a king ruling with the support of literally everyone from every class. If others provided alternatives that were of comparative quality to Steam's services, they'd have less market dominance. The solution to entering the market's "game" isn't to cry like a baby and demand the best player be suspended for being good, it's to play better and provide better service. 30% is the BASELINE and open for negotiations from the getgo. Publishers flocked to steam cause it was a lot cheaper than selling physical copies, and cheaper than developing and maintaining their own online shop. And for that valve provides a lot of services. On Crepic you don't even get a forum for your game. Heck Crepic even RELIES on the public free APIs that Valve is providing with Steam. And really 30% is not much. There are games that are a decade old that still have thousands of active online players - with steam providing the lobby, matchmaking, cloud-saving, achievement-system etc still for free. Those things are not cheap to provide (hence why crepic and co don't have them).
@cc34 ай бұрын
it's not open to negotiations unless you're a big studio that can fulfill their quotas. 30% is a lot of money when most indie developers don't use many of the steamworks features yet have to use steam as it's industry standard. It's like google saying they deserve 30% of your income because they're the ones directing people to your website. it's not quite the same because valve will host the physical files, but developers already have to pay $100 just to put their game on steam. Valve is very consumer friendly generally, but it's indie devs are left with no choice but to lose out on 30% of their income for a service that doesn't cost valve more than a few cents.

@@ABaumstumpf you can't negotiate it. The numbers you are speaking are in the millions of sales, the exact number is not written down but I know of people with nearly $5M in sales that have not received any sort of reduction. The second comparison is a bit wild from me, I admit, but google is another company that we accept as a monopoly because their service is far superior to it's competitors. for the vast majority of games on the steam store, the only things steam hosts are the storefront, the downloads, the DRM, the discussions, and the automated steam support. We (as developers) pay a $100 fee to put it on the steam store already, so this 30% just comes off as greedy. I agree with the way the current system works but the size of steams cut is cheeky. They've only got away with having their cut so high because they can get away with it, and other storefronts such are currently facing similar lawsuits. Why now? because it's taken this long for anybody to bother doing anything about it. The apple lawsuit set a precedent and now we (as consumers and developers) may see the reward. I'm a huge fan of valve and everything they've done but don't forget, they're a company focused on profits like any other.

As someone who has spent thousands on steam I agree that steam has been very good to their customers. This lawsuit uses the angle of consumers but in reality it's for the indie game publishers who cannot sell their games without the 30% cut. I personally think this cut should be A LOT lower, 30% is ridiculous for a platform to host a game, especially since the developer has already spent $100 to publish the game on steam. Playstation and Microsoft are also seeing similar lawsuits. This is speculative as steam is a private company, but I am doubtful that the difference in server costs of downloading a steam game equate to even a cent per download. Some games use steamworks to run items, and multiplayer, but I feel like that price should be a separate service as most games do not. I believe steam need to be held to the same standards as the other monopolistic tech giants such as apple (who have successfully been sued for similar behaviour). I'll continue to use steam but I think you're completely wrong in saying that the 30% cut doesn't increase the price of games.

wtf is valve supposed to do in this situation, promote epic games launcher??? No private company would ever do that, and a public one only if 99.9% of their shareholders say so. And if she argues about the cut, she should be suing Roblox, as developers get about 25% on their in game transactions.

GOG Galaxy might be a viable competitor for Steam. At least according to my Brother, since I myself do not have anything on GOG, so I do not use it.
@BlackSabbath6285 ай бұрын
Eh, not really? It's missing a lot of features compared to the steam client. The greatest advantage it has over steam is that you can download offline installers that you can use to download games without a Games as a Service client, but that's a feature the GOG always had before galaxy.

Steam just has an invite api, it doesn't just give you server access. It's like how you can invite ppl via discord but you're still hosting on your computer, most of these connections are peer to peer (meaning one computer hosts the other connects) if the game is set up with an internal server then its peer server peer, but that's still not steam's server, a good example of this is GMod.

The biggest advantage of Steam over Epic is that Steam doesn’t constantly recommend pay to win gacha anime games to me. No, Epic. For the last time, I don't want Genshin.

Yee...games were locked sround 60$ for ages,but lately games like the sloppy CODMW3(2024) charge for 80$...and most others do that too...especially on Conoles...and on Steam too...

This just honestly feels like a cash grab being that the lawsuit is requesting 800 million fucking dollars. Like I get that me as a middle class consumer can see that as a lot of money, but that has to be a good chunk of steams revenue being that it’s nearly a billion dollars.
