"Unfairly shutting down competition for PC games." Steam literally never engaged in anti competitive practices, unlike Epic Games which pays game developers to have their games be exclusive to their launcher.

Epic even emailed Valve basically saying "please stop being a good service and charge your customers more or we'll sue you" to which someone at Valve CC'd the email to Gabe with the attached note "You mad bro?" Unbelievably based. Edit: just saw the original clip of it, it wasn't some random at Valve, _it was the COO._ Edit 2: since I've noticed some people asking for a link, I must apologise and confirm links don't like this site. If you're curious, find a video titled "Valve Is Unfathomably Based" by Asmongold Clips.

EG is such a fucked company and this guy was defending them, wild. "Decent game launcher" kiss my ass, it would ignore my setting to STOP notifying me about fortnite every 2 fucking minutes. Also, paying devs to be exclusive is the worst practice I've seen in a while. They spite steam and their only goal is to overtake steam. They deserve to never be profitable.

Literally the definition of a natural monopoly in a way. Steam has been around for over 2 decades and is objectively better and more efficient than its competition. It's not that they abused their position to get here, it's that every other alternative has shot themselves in the foot or is effectively worse than steam, so naturally Steam becomes the go-to platform and dominates the market, simply because it's the only reliable and effective choice

As if every single company in the entire world, especially in the US, doesn't abuse the smallest spec of any dominate position in an industry. You have dozens of companies to use for this. Multiple companies in a mafia agreement to manipulate the market. But you chose to focus so much on one of the nicest big wigs out there. Why not sue Ubisoft for manipulative agreement terms that you can only read AFTER you've bought the product which cites them as allowed to take away your use of their product. Or the insane amount of unpaid over time and crunch at big tech companies like Konami. Why Valve of all companies?
@sophieedel6324
@sophieedel6324 5 ай бұрын
The claim is that Steams abuses its position by telling game makers they can not offer games cheaper than the price on Steam on other platforms. If that is true, Valve is abusing the market, price agreements like that are illegal.

Valve gives an insane amount of features for developers, they earn that 30% easily. Cloud saves, achievements, P2P networking, controller support, secure items market and inventory, beta branch system, your own personal forum for your game, game streaming so people can play your game from any device and play local co-op with friends remotely, proton so that Linux users can play your game with no porting work. Epic Games REFUSES to even let Linux users try to run their games and the install preventions into their games that prevent them from running even if they could, just because they don't want Linux to succeed (this is not exaggerated, the CEO said it himself on twitter)

Valve has always remembered the #1 rule of business: Keep the customers happy. Valve does not have a monopoly by force, they are a rare case of a king ruling with the support of literally everyone from every class. If others provided alternatives that were of comparative quality to Steam's services, they'd have less market dominance. The solution to entering the market's "game" isn't to cry like a baby and demand the best player be suspended for being good, it's to play better and provide better service. People often say "make it and they shall come." Well guess what. Y'all haven't made shit. Only Valve has.

30% is the BASELINE and open for negotiations from the getgo. Publishers flocked to steam cause it was a lot cheaper than selling physical copies, and cheaper than developing and maintaining their own online shop. And for that valve provides a lot of services. On Crepic you don't even get a forum for your game. Heck Crepic even RELIES on the public free APIs that Valve is providing with Steam. And really 30% is not much. There are games that are a decade old that still have thousands of active online players - with steam providing the lobby, matchmaking, cloud-saving, achievement-system etc still for free. Those things are not cheap to provide (hence why crepic and co don't have them).
@cc3
@cc3 4 ай бұрын
it's not open to negotiations unless you're a big studio that can fulfill their quotas. 30% is a lot of money when most indie developers don't use many of the steamworks features yet have to use steam as it's industry standard. It's like google saying they deserve 30% of your income because they're the ones directing people to your website. it's not quite the same because valve will host the physical files, but developers already have to pay $100 just to put their game on steam. Valve is very consumer friendly generally, but it's indie devs are left with no choice but to lose out on 30% of their income for a service that doesn't cost valve more than a few cents.

@@ABaumstumpf you can't negotiate it. I don't know where you're reading otherwise, as someone who has gone through this process and know many more who have, I've never heard of any indie developer getting special treatment. The numbers you are speaking are in the millions of sales, the exact number is not written down but I know of people with nearly $5M in sales that have not received any sort of reduction. The second comparison is a bit wild from me, I admit, but google is another company that we accept as a monopoly because their service is far superior to it's competitors. for the vast majority of games on the steam store, the only things steam hosts are the storefront, the downloads, the DRM, the discussions, and the automated steam support. We (as developers) pay a $100 fee to put it on the steam store already, so this 30% just comes off as greedy. I agree with the way the current system works but the size of steams cut is cheeky. They've only got away with having their cut so high because they can get away with it, and other storefronts such are currently facing similar lawsuits. Why now? because it's taken this long for anybody to bother doing anything about it. The apple lawsuit set a precedent and now we (as consumers and developers) may see the reward. I'm a huge fan of valve and everything they've done but don't forget, they're a company focused on profits like any other.

I really cant help you if you are not able to read. "getting special treatment" Negotiating and being treated specially are 2 entirely different things. If you think you magically will have to pay nothing - yeah not gonna happen. "for the vast majority of games on the steam store, the only things steam hosts are the storefront, the downloads, the DRM, the discussions, and the automated steam support. " Ah, so "only" the vast majority of running costs. yeah. Go tell me how much cheaper it is to sell it in a physical store while you are at it already. "because it's taken this long for anybody to bother doing anything about it." That is not bothering about it - that is being an entitled moronic arsehole. Nobody forces you to sell your game on steam. Steam does not force you to sell exclusively on their platform. You can sell it any way you like but running all those services costs money. A good example would be crepic-store: constantly in the red despite offering just a fraction of the services.

As someone who has spent thousands on steam I agree that steam has been very good to their customers. This lawsuit uses the angle of consumers but in reality it's for the indie game publishers who cannot sell their games without the 30% cut. I personally think this cut should be A LOT lower, 30% is ridiculous for a platform to host a game, especially since the developer has already spent $100 to publish the game on steam. Playstation and Microsoft are also seeing similar lawsuits. This is speculative as steam is a private company, but I am doubtful that the difference in server costs of downloading a steam game equate to even a cent per download. Some games use steamworks to run items, and multiplayer, but I feel like that price should be a separate service as most games do not. I believe steam need to be held to the same standards as the other monopolistic tech giants such as apple (who have successfully been sued for similar behaviour). I'll continue to use steam but I think you're completely wrong in saying that the 30% cut doesn't increase the price of games.

Steam just has an invite api, it doesn't just give you server access. It's like how you can invite ppl via discord but you're still hosting on your computer, most of these connections are peer to peer (meaning one computer hosts the other connects) if the game is set up with an internal server then its peer server peer, but that's still not steam's server, a good example of this is GMod.
