Truly impressive and all about torque... Guessing this is in Tennessee? I used to occasionally go to the meets in Columbia to see what kind of steamers would show up. Such impressive machines! And the trackwork shown here is impressive, in its own right, for it's probably the best-engineered and smoothest I've seen. It would have to be to move such a load, especially around that curve. Alas, I don't get to see such craftsmanship today in northwest North Dakota, so I'm glad to see such vids. Thanks for sharing!

Where are you located? What is your website? What gauge? Where did you get that wonderful SHAY locomotive? FWIW - I grew up (65 years ago) with an home made amusement park railroad outside of Albany, NY in the 50's & 60's. I was doing the maintenance when I was 10 years old as my step-father was too drunk most of the time to be useful. The railroad was 20 5/8" gauge. The passenger cars could carry 2 kids per seat or one adult. The engines were powered by 5 hp Wisconsin air cooled industrial gasoline engines with chain drive to the wheels. The engine looked like steam but, thankfully, were not. This video reminds me of the happier parts of that time. Any help locating the remnants of that railroad would be appreciated.

A very good looking nice steam loco. What a kind of engine is this? I see on the right side two vertical cilinders, or is this a double expansion machine? And what on the left side? Where can i find more about this loco?
@danielfantino171410 ай бұрын
Inventor Ephraim Shay roughly 150 years ago. They were slow but really powerful and could run on very bad tracks. Shay locomotives were designed for logging opérations. Minus transmission they are exactly like modern automobile and truck. Vertical pistons turning crankshaft with universal joints up to différentiel to wheels. They were caller articulated. Shay, Heisler and Climax adopter 3 different principles to get same result. On biggest Shay even tender was powered.

@@danielfantino1714 Thank you for your answer / information. Interesting, now i can search further form more specifications. I own a german steam-loco type 23 (3,5 gauge) build by my father. Unfortunately the train is not capable to drive on steam because my father died before the loco was completed and ready to fire-up. And i am not the man who can finished the work, i am an retired electrician. The loco was completely ready to be tested on compressed air. Than we discovered some problems with the drive mechanism. Father successful made the necessary changings on the left side, but before the right-side was ready he died at 80 years. I regrette the loco wil never drive on steam, he became a honored place in my living room.

My pleasure if it can help you. So sad story, but in your family and in your heart it stays or she stays. One day may be her right side will be fix too. On that day she´ll steam and move by herself for the first time. She´ll pull two generations Dreams and works. Dad and its son. So strange how cold dead steel can be so magic.. Anf then, who knows, she can survive you too. Old steamer can wait, very patiently, sleep so long until a spark bring them back to life. One day....she will

@redlight72211 ай бұрын
I’m impressed. But I have also lived on a farm long enough to know if that rope goes. You are going to have a messed up locomotive or a very hurt operator. Not much protection there between you and it.
@beeble200311 ай бұрын
Probably both. Ropes under tension store an enormous amount of energy. If that snaps, the half that's connected to the locomotive will snap back at huge speed, potentially causing worse than a "very hurt operator". Crewmen on ships have been decapitated by mooring ropes snapping.
