Steam ~ Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye 1969 Pop Purrfection Version

One of the most iconic pop tunes of the 60's was "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" was written at the last minute and was calculated to be as cheesy as possible so that DJ's wouldn't play it and thus would allow the A side to gain the airplay. But their plans were foiled when Fontana Records flipped the single and helped to propel this one into the fabric of music history.
This all started when Paul Leka who co wrote and produced the Lemon Piper's #1 pop hit "Green Tambourine" and got him a contract with Mercury Records. Remembering his friend Gary DeCarlo who he met when he was brought into the Chateaus to record a few songs. DeCarlo was also signed to the label based on Leka's recommendation.
Gary brought four songs to record and with a few minutes of studio time left, wrote and recorded a B side designed to fail. Paul felt that all four songs DeCarlo brought were good enough to be singles issue and threw together a B side that used a composition "Kiss Him Goodbye" from 1961 written by bandmate Dale Frashuer and completed the song. DeCarlo had already adopted the stage name Garrett Scott and provided the vocals.
All four of the DeCarlo songs flopped, except that one throwaway that just would not die. It was the perfect marriage of voice and band. They used dummy lyrics with Na Na and Hey Hey and decided to just go with the stream of consciousness of those lyrics, doubled the vocals and left for the night.
On their way out, it was nearly 2AM and the manhole covers were spewing steam which gave Leka the idea to name the band Steam. When they took the song to the label, the exec felt that the song was too good for the B side and scheduled it for commercial release.
DeCarlo was miffed that all of his songs stiffed and refused to continue recording with Steam even though the band name was Steam featuring Garrett Scott for that iconic single. Too bad, who knows what other pop confection classics they could have come up with.

I think this was the final #1 hit of the 60's and the first song of the 70's was BJ Thomas with "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" All according to my Billboard book of #1's...that makes this song super special!

I remember hearing this song once long time ago when I was probably a little girl but where I live they really didn't play it that much so I really wasn't that familiar with it. The financing to it now I remember now and it really is a very nice song. It brings back memories of where I was years ago and it's really been nice being able to hear it and it's whole entirety now that I'm a grown woman, even though I don't know the history of the group. However very nice music and thank you for bringing to us DJ disco cat.

Ah yes !! December 1969. Steam, were lookin for a B-side song. Paul Leka, the writer, when lost for words while writing, would say “na na na na na,” and then lead singer Gary DeCarlo threw in the “Hey Hey,” portion. The song was derived from an older song from the group called The Glenwoods Leka & DeCarlo called “Kiss Him Goodbye.” Leka played keyboard and had engineer Warren Dewey splice together a drum track from one of DeCarlos’ other 4 unrelated singles including a conga drum solo. It all came together in the studio between 7 PM and 5 AM the next morning. Before we knew it their beloved hit was solid. The sound skyrocketed to # 1 in the U.S for two weeks (Dec 6 and 13, of 1969). By the beginning of the 21st century sales from the song exceeded 6.5 million records.. attaining Multi-Platinum record status. So Merry Christmas to DJ DIsco as I referred to as another one of his splendid editing jobs for such a great hit !!!

Oh, so wonderful! DJDiscoCat have you ever heard the version by Munich Machine featuring vocals by Donna Summer? It’s from before her solo recording career, when she was still in Germany (I think after she was in a production of Hair over there but can’t recall the exact timeline). Apparently they were so quick to record, there was no time for a drum beat! So they mixed in a beat from a previously released album track from Neil Sedaka and it worked.. making it possibly the first pop record in history to use a sampled drum beat.
