I think the wheel @ 9:10 is much like the one in the story about a pirate who walked into a pub with a wheel sticking out of his pants. The bartender said nothing about it for a while wishing to be polite but in time curiosity got the better of him and he asked the pirate, "is that a ships wheel sticking out of your pants?" Arrr, it is, and it''s drivin me nuts." I think these boats at one time were drawn by horses walking alongside the canal. My dad came from Newcastle and one of his expressions was "more nerve than a canal horse.'" Thanks for sharing.

Do any of these boats use flash boilers? Seems that boiler explosion would be a concern or are these hydrostatically tested
@kylemccourt6636 жыл бұрын
In the US they are supposed to get hydro tested and certified every so often.
@haroldpearson60255 жыл бұрын
Testing of pressure vessels used in public are very strict in UK. New boilers have to be constructed to proven design plans and materials. The first test is hydraulic to twice working pressure +10% for 10min. The steam test has to show working pressure gauge, water gauge and safety valves that will releive the pressure with a very active fire. There must be a minimum of 2 working methods for getting water into the boiler. The hydraulic test is valid for 5 years with a new boiler with a re test every 3 years after that. The steam test is every 12 months and can only be carried out with a valid hydraulic certificate in place. Given the relative low pressures, 100/150psi the boilers on these small boats and locomotives are very OTT in terms of construction.

Get a condenser do not waste all that heat, all you have to do is re-condense the steam and put it back to the boiler at 95deg. for minimal heat loss. That is why everybody else is.

Unbelievable rate of pollution. Not only CO2, but soot and carcinogenic particulates. Time they changed their engines.

Well the amount of steamboats today is not significant to the pollution of the world.
@donepearce5 жыл бұрын
@@paulhorn2665 You would seriously make that argument? That's the logic that everybody can use about their own car.
@paulhorn26655 жыл бұрын
@@donepearce No, just think how many combustion engine cars and how many steam ships or locomotives are around today. There is a huge difference, plus many of the little steam ships are fired by wood, like people have little wood-stoves at home. wood is a comparetly neutral fuel.
@donepearce5 жыл бұрын
@@paulhorn2665 Each one of those is simply one more, incredibly dirty combustion engine. It doesn't matter that it falls into a group of not many, it is just another source of pollution - exactly as is my car. The only difference is that my car produces much less of it. I live close to Little Venice and I enjoy walking along the canal towards the London Zoo. The walk is invariably spoiled somewhat by the stink of coal fires coming from the narrow boats.
@paulhorn26655 жыл бұрын
@@donepearce If you have a problem with pollution move to the countryside and leave the city. On green fields there is clean air. Okay there is the beloved smell of pig shit then, awful, but no harm to the lungs! I tell you what,these ships are a minority of pollution makers, you could not even calculate the percentage of guilt of todays steamers of the CO2 production. We have ten of thousands diesel running and I prefer the smell and the comperatly "thick" particles of coal and wood fires more then the fine diesel-sulphur particles which wont stop at your bronchia and get into your lungs. Also stinks of mineral oils.And I tell you what: I am a crew member of an old steam tug, working my spare time many houres to run the ship and yes I love to smoke cigarettes on my beloved steamer :-) The retard Greta Thunberg and the eco-nuts can kiss my arse.
