So glad you played this video. It brings back so many memory's, when I was young we went on holiday to Ventnor travelling by train boat train. Remember those old trains. Also another year we stayed at Shanklin. At the back of our Cavan the rail line ran and we used to see the trains go bay.

I bet you can still smell the steam from the train as it went past, great memories I'm sure. Thanks for watching Michael. 🙂

Many thanks for posting this Jack, and to think that you have recently walked along those very same trackbeds….. Great nostalgia, late 50’s early 60’s I’m guessing ? and great to see the old locos and carriages just doing what they were meant to do. Any time I visit the IOW Steam railway I always try to imagine ‘ordinary’ people waiting for the train to go about their daily business just as a routine thing, going shopping, going to school, visiting family etc. Yeah, great post ! Cheers, Richard.

Thank you Richard, glad you enjoyed it! Yes you are probably right on the timeframe, locos don't look too dilapidated so wouldn't be mid 60s. Probably around 1962 I'd guess but unfortunately the video didn't have a timestamp. Always great to remember/imagine what it was like back then when these great machines were just your average public transport. Anyway, hope you are well and all the best 🙂👍

That was just wonderful. Took me right back to my childhood watching the iow locos on Ryde pier and sailing across from Portsmouth on the steamers. ❤️

Great footage. Like your other comments this brought back happy memories of my regular two week holiday to the Island as a child in the early 1950s, staying at a guest house in Lake. The excitement of the train from Waterloo, getting on the boat at Portsmouth Harbour and then the train ride to Shanklin from the pier head, memories that will always stay with me. Thanks for that Jack.

What a great video. I love seeing these old Island train journeys that are, sadly, no more. Just a quick question of you, or any of your subscribers could help me. Where could I see or buy old street maps of the towns on IOW? 60’s/70’s era. I am curious to see what the road layouts used to be before my time as an Island resident. Thank you.

Hello mate, thanks for watching as always 🙂. I would probably go to the book shop in Ryde just down from the Job Center, they are great in there 👍

Proud to be a Caulkhead watching this! Sincere thanks to you guys for posting this! Our island train heritage is slowly being forgotten! This was an Awesome step back in time to when everyone pulled together and our island trains ran like clockwork!

Absolutely! We must remember our heritage ... it is very important. Thank you for watching 🙂👍

Great footage and nice soundtrack. Now I wonder if you can tell us something or look into it. There are currently quite extensive renovations going on on Ryde Pier. What is not clear is if those renovations include restoring the second track and its platforms at both ends. There has been some talk over the years that the second track might eventually be restored, for use by either the Island Line or the IOW Steam Railway.

@@tsl56 thank you for the kind words! 🙂 I think the work going on on Ryde Pier at the moment is purely structural and unfortunately there's no plans to bring the 2nd line back into use anytime soon. One thing I do know though is that if the opportunity arises, the steam railway wouldn't just seek to extend back into Ryde St johns, but infact all the way to Ryde Esplande, this though would depend on the island line's future. As a side note, I will be looking into this subject in a special video at the start of next year where I take another look at the prospect of getting a line back into Ventnor, if you follow the channel you'll get a notification when it comes up. Hope that helps and thanks for your comment. All the best 🙂👍

Class 0P and proud of it! Those parcels vans were ubiquitous in the south til the 80's; these are 4-wheelers but there were impressive bogie vans too with similar design features, although unlikely IoW had any.
@WightWanderer12 сағат бұрын
Thanks for watching 🙂 Yes they were all 4 wheelers I believe, but strangely the Steam Railway have a bogie version, might have been purchased for its underframe to bring grounded coaching stock back into service 👍
