The fight against the water. The Netherlands is known for that. For the first time in the Netherlands, 3 large steam pumping stations were used to drain the Haarlemmermeer. In the oldest plans it was still assumed that about 160 windmills were needed for this. However, progress was chosen and 3 steam pumping stations, the Leeghwater, the Lynden and the Cruquius, completed the job in 3 years. De strijd tegen het water. Daar staat Nederland om bekend. Voor het droogleggen van het Haarlemmermeer werden voor het eerst in Nederland 3 grote stoomgemalen ingezet. In de oudste plannen ging men er nog vanuit dat hier ongeveer 160 windmolens voor nodig waren. Er werd echter gekozen voor vooruitgang en 3 stoomgemalen, de Leeghwater, de Lynden en de Cruquius klaarden de klus in 3 jaar tijd.
