I'll never forget the trip to the top of the Mtn with my family, this is one train trip all family's should take and its like a 2 or 3 hr trip up and back and one of the best times to go is when the full fall leaves have changed. Also love the steam whistle echoing across the valley. Love the video, watching steam trains could be an all day event. As a kid, we would visit grandparents in Miami. Florida East Coast railroad would bring out an old steam locomotive. We would go down to the depot, and watch it come through. The cousins and I would start at one end of the platform to the other end jumping over the steam cloud. The only stipulations, stay on the waiting passenger side of the yellow painted line. A ride on a scenic steam railroad is always worth it. The only other thing that can compare is taking in old vintage warbirds at an airshow.

I went the Cass website. They claim 5 to 10 % grades. That is impressive. I have a nerdy thought for you technical foamers: I believe the Shays can take these grades because all the loco weight is on the drivers, and all the drivers are connected. So adhesion is maximized and wheel slip is minimized. I believe nothing can beat a Shay on steep grades for adhesion RR's. I love this video JT ! Thank you.

Thats an impressive cut-a-way of the pistons moving, that water tower looked it was ready for a lick of paint, certainly unusual having the tender facing forward. You said the gauge was 4'8'',, I think NZ gauge is 4'8" 1/2, unless you go to Aucklands museum "Museum of Transport & Technology" (MOTAT) for short. That whistle in the hills takes me back to a time & place long forgotten. Thanks for your families commitment, love your sons call sign for you, I didn't miss what was said, I used RT's for years in road transport. Keep up the Safe Railfanning.😎👌👍

As a child of the 1970s, I remember once a year a Steam Locomotive would come through Blanchester, Ohio on its way from Chillicothe to Cincinnati. It normally happened around early August. My Parents wedding anniversary was August 1st and it came through at least 3 times on their anniversary date. We would plan a picnic for the day with our highlight being the train.
@JawTooth3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I remember it also. I rode on it! It was the Chessie Steam Special. The last year was 1978, I believe. I have a lot of pictures that I took on that trip. The steam locomotive was destroyed in a roundhouse fire shortly after that. The fire happened in northern Kentucky just east of Covington and Cold Springs. The train actually ran from Cincinnati To Chillicothe and back. The tracks from Greenfield to Chillicothe are now gone and the train station in Chillicothe where we got off the train burnt to the ground a few years back. The good ole days
@neolithicnobody81843 жыл бұрын
@@JawTooth Yeah, back when Amtrak still ran through the area. We lived out of town about 1/4 mile from the tracks(Level Station). If we went to the back of our property and peaked through the fence line we could see a full mile section of the tracks. Back then you could tell the time by the horn blowing and which direction it was headed. Haven't been able to do that for decades now.
@JawTooth3 жыл бұрын
@@neolithicnobody8184 Cool! I use to live next this line on Obannonville Road just east of Loveland back in the mid 80s. I rode Amtrak across it in about 1979 I believe. Chillicothe still has some good train action but I wish they would have left the tracks in place.

@@JawTooth Is that the road that turns into Dallasburg Road at the County Line? That crossing down in the Holler was always a rough one. lol A single lane crossing on a (barely)2 lane road and uphill both directions. lol Shoot, I'm old enough to remember when the Bike Trail still had the tracks in place. I used to explore the old abandoned tracks in the Morrow area back then. Many of the old creek crossings in that area had the best swimming holes.
