This tutorial works like a charm! I also enabled my external SSD to mount whenever I plug it in. So all I have to do is plug it in, switch to desktop and immediately back to gaming mode, and I'm good to go Kinda sucks bc I unplug my ssd a lot lol so I gotta sometimes remind the system to load from/install to the ssd

it is a bad idea to format to NTFS, better to format from within steamos using kde partition manager to ext4

never thought about it but if you like to play docked then an external ssd is a good solution indeed, never tested it but should be comparable to the speed of a sata ssd because usb 3.2x2 gets up to 450mbps (even though they say 10gbps, it never gets close to that) bought a usb c 100w capable 3m cable recently to charge while playing but its still on the way, if I hook up the cable to the dock instead of directly to the charger and add in an ssd should work like wonders this is probably the best solution to who bought the 64gb version like me
@KuroganeX32 жыл бұрын
bought 64gb version andordered 1tb ssd so once i receive both devices i will swap 64gb for 1tb and i got 4x 256 gb microsd cards and 1x 2tb hdd samsung and 1x 1tb Portable SSD T7 good thing i can swap these HDD/SSDs between Windows/linux so i can use all these on my gaming pc/notebook/steamdeck at once

You can use a hard drive with alot of other things and charge. Just get a usb c hub with at least a 60watt passthrough charging.i have mine running a 26" 1440p monitor, Ethernet, keyboard mouse and an SD card plus 4 tb external storage.runs fine

I can recommend the MINIX NEO series of external SSD. They have pass through power. Built in NVME, and an hdmi out and 2 USB A ports. Been using mine for a while to transfer games from my desktop to the deck. You also should just use the deck to partition it, Windows partition software is notoriously bad and the kde partition manager that the deck comes with uses Parted as a back end which is industry standard when it comes to setting up infrastructure since it's so reliable. Also don't use NTFS. It's terrible on Linux. If you have to share it between Linux and Windows use ExFat. NTFS is propriatary which means it's not fully native on Linux. If you're only using linux just use EXT4 as the format. Then it has full indexing and compression support.

Does this work to install games on ssd and run on the steamdeck while connected to the steamdeck
@foxman83442 жыл бұрын
@@defyiant Yeah. It works well. You just need to add it in the downloads section in steam on the desktop. But unless you're playing docked I think it'd be a bit of a pain to have it dangling off like that, and risks the USB cable on it and the decks port from getting some nasty wear and tear. If you do ext4 instead of NTFS it's easier to get it to mount nicely too.
@defyiant2 жыл бұрын
@@foxman8344 looked into it bro and it only supports up to 960gb I thought I could add my own ssd into it
@foxman83442 жыл бұрын
@@defyiant It's a standard NVME hub inside. I actually took mine apart and swapped it out to test it. Works just fine. They're just a pain to open up, and they have a dab of hot glue to keep the drive from shifting right on the mounting hole for the NVME. I wanted an extra NVME for a cache drive in my NAS anyways so I grabbed it for the price with the drive. If you just want an empty one with fast charging their are a few out there that offer PD 100W and an m.2 port. I found this one was the best bang for my buck where I live. :) I'm also used to most deck owners seemingly being terrified of opening anything up. lol So I tend to recommend things that require less critical thinking to people.

You can do both just need extra commands to show up on game mode.

I don't own a Steam Deck yet. Can you automatically boot to Desktop Mode from startup and then go into gaming mode ? Then the external drive should be there without all that back and forth. Thanks for the video.
@jaccetaylor3672 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think you can it will always boot into gaming mode off of shit down or restart unless there has been some development without me knowing

One you can charge and use the SSD you just need the right cable.... Two if you Google KZbin video there is a guy that shows you how to auto mount in game mode

I have formatted my external drive to ext4, my Steamdeck sees it, I have all checked in the removable drives section. But going into Steam, settings, then in Downloads and clicking the Steam Library folders and clicking the plus icon, I get a long list of random folders. I dont get the option to add my 2TB Seagate at all. Any help or ideas?
