Did you boil the crab alive?

Great question! I had put it into the refrigerator until it had fallen asleep before boiling it.

Who cares? Inlearned today that plants talk to each other and have feelings but we always have to saw them in half alive

Last time I cleaned a crab (European brown crab), I decided to experiment with brute force. No hammering, no crackers, just hand strength, and in a couple of cases pressing against the edge of the table. The results were impressive, There wasn't a single piece of shell in the resulting dressed crab, and I think only one person found a piece of the feather from inside the claw. The brown crab was harder to do this with than with a mud crab, but definitely worthwhile. Never cleaned a dungeness crab, as we don't have access to them here.

Your techniques will work too. I prefer to keep as much of the meat together as possible. That's my preference of eating it.
